Does anyone know how long it would take a dealer to get a new vehicle registered? They held off till 1st March to make sure that I'd get 2025 plates, but I'm still waiting. I realise that this is a busy time at DVLA since a lot of dealers will be doing the same thing, but it does seem to be taking a lot longer than I expected. Any thoughts?

I wonder if it depends whether the dealer registers the van online with DVLA or sends an application in the post?

When we bought a new car last year, the moment the dealer was satisfied the deal was agreed with us and the sale confirmed, he pressed a few buttons on his computer including our details, which generated a registration number and we were good to go in 24 hours when they'd made and fitted the number plates. He paid the initial registration fees at the same time also.

But stuff just seems to take ages when it is submitted by post.

I think it was being posted, unfortunately. Although I don't know why anybody would do that rather than go online....

Most motorhome dealers are not part of the RaV scheme that allows dealers to do instant online registrations and have to use the slower postal route.

When I worked at a car dealership (admittedly many moons ago) we had a list of registrations and allocated them to vehicles on the application to DVLA - so the dealer should know the reg.

Our dealer registers by post,, we paid and drove the van away, technically not supposed to but didn't worry me and carried on using the van, it came up registered 10 days later.

Unfortunately I haven't got a registration number yet. As far as I know, I can pick up the van as soon as it is registered and the docs will follow???
The dealer should have selected a registration number from a DVLA supplied list before submitting the application. As soon as the DVLA have completed the process the registration number will show online. I suggest you ask the dealer what number went on the application.

If they have a registration number and have sent off the paperwork, does that mean that they can now sell it to me? Or do I have to wait until they get something back from DVLA?

Officially you should wait until it is registered before driving it on a public highway. Many years ago there was a period of grace allowed to get it registered but this has long gone. Some dealers and purchasers may be ok with driving off early as Lenny HB did but at least one Funster on here got pulled up by the Police for driving an unregistered vehicle. I guess it depends on how lucky you feel. As soon as the registration shows on the DVLA website you can drive off. The dealer should be able to give you the registration number they have used on the paperwork and if they can’t then you need to be asking them some questions.

Thanks, I didn't know that. You clearly have good knowledge of the system. (y)

They keep saying they are waiting for the reg number, which is odd given what you say. I will try them again armed with this information!

I have just picked up a 2025 van. The dealer had a list of registrations and the plates were already on the van when I picked it up. The registration was done on line in less than 5 minutes whilst I was there. I got the V5 with a couple of days of picking the van up.

Ditto with a new 2025 car.

I have done a little more online digging. Dealers are often issued with a list of registration numbers which they can allocate to customers vehicles before submitting the V55/4 registration document. Alternatively they can leave question 1 on the V55/4 form blank and the DVLA will allocate a registration number for them. If you have not got the number there seems to be little you can do so my advice has not been helpful. I did not realise that not all dealers were given a list of numbers in advance, sorry.

Thanks for taking the time to explore this. Looks like there is quite a variation in how registration is done. Oh well - I shall just have to try to be patient. It's horrendous waiting though when I know the sodding thing is just sitting there waiting for me. :(
