Having four new tyres fitted by Halfords tomorrow. Asked them to ensure tyres have been manufactured within the last six months, to which they responded “we aim to provide and fit all tyres within 2 years of manufacture, however this is not always possible in every case. Tyres are considered to be “new” and fit for retail up to 5 years from the date of production; this is the industry standard based on the German BRV”.
Given the fact my vehicle is over 3.5t and tyres over 5 years old are shown up on an M.O.T as an advisory, then something doesn’t seem correct. The tyres on the vehicle are currently 6 and 7 years old.
Anyone have advice on this and whether I should pay the £40 call out charge and refuse to have older tyres fitted should they turn up with older tyres?

I've was a caravan engineer for 30 years and wasn't aware of this used to advise customers if their tyres are more than 5 years old and needed changing the NCC should sort this out

That might be their policy. In reality, they're likely to be very new (assuming they're common sizes) as they can't afford to have warehouses full of rotting tyres. I'd suggest turning up and checking the codes before they fit them.

I think I would have used somewhere better than Halfrauds. 😳
Where does all this anti halfords, or to quote bigtree Halfrauds. Come from.
Last week took my van to local Halfords with a slow puncture on the inner wheel of my DRW Movano.
Yes Sir can I help.. yes I think my inner rear offside tyre has a dodgy valve. ( note requires removing both offside rear wheels).
OK says he.. we are a bit busy at moment, but bear with me and I will get to you soonest.
30 mins later, he arrives with seat protector and drives van in..removes both rear offside tyres and dissappears into backroom with wheel.. reappears 5 mins later and refits both wheels and drives van back out.
Yes your valve was leaking and has been replaced...
How much do I owe you then says I....
He says, To replace a valve.....
NO CHARGE....
So does that sound like a Hal FRAUD.
Don't think so..

Update - Halfords have arrived. All tyres 4422 so well pleased, however they can’t get the first one fitted due to the shape of the alloy wheel. Now waiting for someone else to come and have a look and see what they can do. Have stressed I don’t want the alloys damaged but not convinced they’ll avoid this.

Couple of suggestions -
1. Take pics (my apologies if you have already done so)
2. Ask for the bolts to be torqued up, I don’t trust air guns

I used Halford's a few years ago, the only problem I had was a disagreement about the normal car valves they was going to fit, but they sent someone out and got high pressure brass one's and all was good. 😁

Far better than another place in Norwich that Black Circle had on their list of fitting centres. 🙄 Bob.

No reputable tyre fitting place would use an air gun to torque wheel nuts.... yes they may use gun for quickness to put nut/bolt partially on and then finish with a torque wrench..

Sounds like you found a good one… but their reputation is equally poor in the bike trade. They don’t formally train their bike mechanics with any of the independent industry training bodies.…they supposedly do it all themselves. Sadly it’s widely regarded as a joke, and I wouldn’t take any bike of mine there
it’s very hard for national chains to ensure consistently good training and knowledge in technical areas - their staff turnover is just too high.

Tyres fitted after second fitter and van arrived, with the second van having equipment much more suited for the task. Anyone thinking of using Halford mobile, I’d suggest adding some notes to the order so that the fitter knows exactly what they’re coming to (seems they don’t know if it’s a motorhome, caravan, or whatever else).
First attempts did damage the first alloy but Halfords will pay for refurbishment.
Overall, can’t praise them enough for the way they resolved the fitting (apart from the initial damage), and sending two vans some 60 miles to ensure customer satisfaction.

Shocking, backs up my opinion of them. poppycamper 😎

It's not an issue really. Tyres don't really deteriorate much if kept in a cool dry warehouse and out of the sun. Sure I wouldn't want some 20 years old ones, but 2 years?, that wouldn't bother me.

Tyre industry works on up to two years old tyres are classed as new.
Not a problem for us as normally worn them out in 3 to 4 years.

Fine for a normal to high mileage car where they will wear before getting old. However, for a motorhome, where the tyres will stay fitted for many years, it's less good, as people go on the date codes regardless of storage condition. For >3500kg there is a legal 10 year limit, which applies from the date code, so you legally have to change after 8 instead of 10, even if the tyres have been protected against UV both in storage and on the drive. Commerical vehicle tyres doing 3000 miles a year can easily last over a decade from a wear perspective.

Only applies to commercial vehicles.

If only doing 3k a year it means the van is spending most of its times sitting around doing nothing, worse case for tyres.
3000 miles is one trip for us.

According to my extensive research a d previous understanding. A tyre can normally be considered new for up to 5 years from its manufacture. However I get it that if you buying tyres that you wanted to last over 5 years you wouldn't want to start with 5 year old tyres.
