On a related issue I've got a bit of damp between my mattress and my 1/2" plywood base. Should I drill some 2" holes every 4" or so to allow it to breathe?

That's one option or add Froli springs which give extra sleeping comfort as well as aid ventilation. Looked at the mesh that you mentioned above but too many mixed reviews of that type of product when we considered it - think it's better than nothing but not as good as Froli.

What did you use to cut the foam mattress please?

I have a hot wire type foam cutter. Use it outdoors though as the fumes are bad. Good for awkward shapes like mug holders. My last mh was plagued by rattles so trying to eliminate them on this one.
