Seeing the news articles about Easter traffic reminded me of when we used to go to the New Forest pre computers. After finally emerging from the Winchester Bypass, you made your way to a central clearing point from where you were allocated a campsite to go to, no choice! I can't remember where the clearing point was, probably one of the old airfields, as there was plenty of concrete space. I also remember Sandy Balls campsite where changeover was Saturday. Friday night arrivals parked in a giant carpark and were processed in the morning. We were going there with the kids when we changed from frame tent to caravan, didn't half improve Friday night sleeping :giggle: Those were the days!

that's brilliant, every tourist hot-spot should have one!

I think the central clearing point is still Lyndhurst. At least judging by the traffic jams something must be there for the world and his wife to need to go there.

Thank you for this. Your post prompted us to make the epic 8.5 mile journey to Ocknell camp site. Here overnight.

I go to the forest regularly for fishing and always go in Fawley way as Lyndhurst is a nightmare ☹️

Not quite the same memories but when our son was little we stayed at Holland’s Wood near Brockenhrust.
The holiday didn’t start well. When we got to Newbury they were building the by pass and our Cavalier overheated in the traffic jam. After a bit of bodging I managed to get the radiator fan running constantly enabling us to get to the site.
The site was lovely but the ponies wandering about the site lost there charm when they got into the tent trying to steal food. At one point a little one took the boil in the bag rice out of the pan.
A squirrel stole our biscuits ran up a tree with them. The last we saw of them was the wrapping drifting down from the tree.

Just spent four nights at Matley Wood and had a great time. Only thing that spoilt it was a tugger running has generator twice a day for two hours at a time!

It is. Don't know why we haven't done it before. Quiet at the moment, can't see any other units from our pitch.
We had lots of donkey visitors 😁 few ponies but mainly donkeys this time.
