We soo far have failed to find new charger as above.

Current broken one has multiple output voltages incl 19v and was bought at Maplins.

What sort of shops, with names, sell these in France? We have tried several electronics and auto shops, but no luck so far.

TIA

Geoff

Could you buy from Amazon.fr and have it sent to you. All they need is an address.

How old is your laptop? Can it be charged with USB C? It's more flexible and cheaper than a 12v-19v supply.

This is what it is called in French
(computer = ordinateur, cigar-lighter = allume-cigar)
You can try various electronics stores, the equivalent of Currys in UK.
FNAC, Darty, Conforama, Boulanger (no it's not a bread shop). Near Germany you may find a MediaMarkt.

Distrelec is my go to place for such things

Just to supplement my previous message. I've got a work laptop, my wife's work laptop and a personal laptop that all came with 19v barrel plug type AC chargers. They are all happy to charge with mains powered usb c adapters.

The other advantage is they'll work with tiny and cheap USB C adapters that plug into a cigarette lighter. These are limited to about 30 watts as they limit themselves to 12v, so not as quick to charge. But it means you don't need mains power or an ugly power adapter.

Will look for them, but we are in the hills now.

Some of the hypermarche may have something, they do seem to stock everything!

No idea whereabouts you are in France you are but if near Mayenne (North West) I have the one pictured which is 12 volt or 2, 230 volt ones, they were for an Acer Aspire A480T
Yours for free.

Just a thought here, many fires are caused by using the incorrect charger, you should always use one supplied by the manufacturer of the device be it an e cigarette a lap top or e bike etc

Dont take my word for it check it out with safety services such as your local fire brigade.

Many may ‘get away’ with it but some are no longer here to tell the tale of when those device went up in flames 🔥

This is why just using the standard power supplies these things come with and having an inverter is so much easier!

For laptops, the power supply is generally just a 19v DC supply capable of 65watts. The power supply doesn't contain the charging smarts, because it's built into the laptop. So it's pretty low risk to get a generic charger.

I use a 12v-19v adaptor with USB plug for my ASUS notebook with no issues at all.

hmmm not according to the fire service or insurers….

many fires are caused by using the incorrect charger,
I can imagine that is true, but how many fires are caused by using a correctly specified charger that is not the same brand as the one the manufacturer bundles with their product? Not many, I'm sure, although admittedly I don't have the figures to back that up.

One of the two 230 volt ones I offered him in previous post is the original that came with the new Acer, it is branded Liteon.

I doubt an insurer will EVER say it is ok to get ANYTHING that is not an original part if you ask them. They would then take on responsibility for the safety of unknown items. Same goes for Fire Service - and I would think ANYONE you ask who would have any comeback to them if something happened after buying a random part.

It's not about insurers or fire service taking responsibility, its about the individual doing the responsible thing in regards to keeping themselves and families safe.

Firefighter safety tips for charging your devices

  • Always use the charger that came with your phone, tablet, e-cigarette or mobile device.
  • If you need to buy a replacement, always choose a branded, genuine product from a supplier you can trust. There are lots of fakes out there, and it can be difficult to spot the difference.

But .... IF they were to say "no problem" then that leaves the door open to people to buy some cheap bargain rubbish, which may cause a fire and then those people can argue they got the go ahead from the "experts". So they will NEVER say anything like that, so quoting what they would say is irrelevant.
Also quoting "insurers say this" and "fire service says that" contradicts what you go on to say.
i.e. You say it is about the "individual doing the responsible thing" but at the same time saying they need to be directed by what the Fire Service or Insurance Companies tell them what to do! That is not about talking responsibility or using their common sense but being directed like children.
People need to learn to not be stupid and not rely on being told basic facts they should be able to work out for themsleves. It is that simple

I had a similar problem in spain, 20v i needed, only amazon.es did one, to a locker

When you say people need to learn not to be stupid, most people are not stupid, there are those who have been informed and those who haven’t.

Unless people are informed, how can they make a choice, non of us were born with the knowledge we have.
