I need to replace a rechargeable battery, but have no idea where to start looking. Can find nothing similar on eBay.

What is the battery for?

Depending on how much you want to spend, you could make your own with some cells (batteries) and a small spot welder (@£30) - expensive for one but over time pays for itself !

It looks the same as the battery for my remote control gas fire, I sourced it online from Macbattery.

Google battery pack suppliers - you'll find lots of firms

As it is 6v and has 5 cells we know it is just 5 nicads and nowt special .. Nicads are 1.2v each
You can just buy 5 1200mA nicads
Lay them flat on a table ( each one top to tail to the next ) and using a blob of hot glue stick them together
Then just solder them together ( + to - )
Finally solder the red wire to the +v that is left unattached and the black to the -v at the other end

You can simply cut off that black heat shrink covering
It will give you something to copy and allow you to whip off the wires and reuse them ....

This is a pretty crappy video using crappy cells etc but it does show what I am talking about in general :)

If you wanna go posh you could buy a few inches of heat shrink to finish it all off nicely

Excellent, I knew I would one day find a use for the soldering set I bought from Aldi.

Just one small detail, if the battery is 6V total, and the physical size of the batteries is OK, then the capacity (mAh) can vary. The original is 1200mAh, but if the cells are 1500mAh it doesn't much matter.

One more question are ni-cd and ni-mh the same thing?

Yes and no. The chemistry is different - nickel-cadmium or nickel metal hydride. But they are interchangeable and rechargeable from the same chargers.

The only problem you might have soldering is if the batteries come with s/steel tags

If you can't be bothered to solder a set up Google search for your nearest model shop they will have them on the shelf.
Used for powering servos for model aircraft and model cars.
I used to fly a spitfire at shows always carried a spare.

I never use the tags any way,, just rip 'em off, give the battery a bit of a file to clean the connector and solder straight to the battery
I raced 1/10 and 1/12th electric cars for years and from word one I built my own 7.2v packs :-)

I would have thought you would find one on Ebay

Er, actually a couple of major differences as illustrated here:

Overcoming the memory effect is a major one - back in my model car racing days, trying to avoid NiCads developing a life of their own was a ritual we could have done without. NiMh is the way to go.
