Back motorhoming after a 6ish year break!
Morning

Has anyone fitted a filtered water tap to their MH?

We are looking at installing one to avoid carrying bottled water around with us for the weight/storage plus environmental issues. There is not a chance of me drinking water from that tank!

Any pros/cons or recommendations please?

We have a Starling water filter system. It’s amazing but incredibly expensive, fortunately in the van when we bought it. Even the replacement filters are £90. But I wouldn’t be without it now. No more bottles of water.

General comment on the safety of water - We don't tend to drink a lot of water (beer is tastier) so one bottle in the fridge is fine for us (filled from a drinking water tap not bought). We do drink a lot of Tea/coffee but boil that straight off the water from the tank. Are you not happy with that either - if so, why?

I used to be very sensitive to foreign water when we went on holidays. Always ended up with a doggy stomach at some pointing he holiday no matter how hard I tried. Then I went to live in Hong Kong for 3 years and couldn't be bothered with buying bottled water so just drank out of the tap. Did a lot of travelling around the far east as that time - Thailand, Cambodia, Borneo etc. Drink water from wherever now! No issues.

We fitted a Nature Pure before Techno Andy discovered they was scamming customers with the cheaper replacement filter, but left in the motorhome when we changed vehicles. 😎

We now have a freestanding water filter recommended by an experienced off site motorhomer JJ 😁 we also use it at home. 🙂
It travels in our sink and the filters last ages, just give the charcoal filters a rub with sandpaper occasionally. 🙂

Our only regret was not buying one when he told us, it would have been alot cheaper. 😉😎 Bob.

We all drink A LOT of water (and wine) I drink at least 3/4 pints a day, water not wine 😂 and everyone else roughly around the same, maybe a little bit less.

I'm on immunosuppressants so any bacteria for me could be an absolute nightmare, it's not worth the risk.

Boiling has to be on a roll for at least a minute to sterilise so we use bottled for the kettle too. Cooking is ok as it's mainly pasta/rice so that's in the pan for a while anyway.

Yes, the Nature Pure system as mentioned earlier. Despite the previous scam concerning the filters, it is a very good system, and most (if not all) of us who were caught up with the scam, were compensated by way of a refund and 4 x extra filters, either hard water or micro bacterial as preferred.

We let our first installation go with the sale of the Hymer. When we returned to Spain for the winter in our new MH, Rita had to revert to bottled water, as she too is immune suppressed.
Since then, I have installed another Nature Pure system, as I already have a stock of filters, and now she is able to drink straight from the tap. The water quality is excellent and the reduction of scale on both the taps and in the kettle is clearly evident. (y)

If going for the Nature Pure system, make sure you get the right filters for your specific need, ie, hard water or bacterial.

If on a budget, you could install an inline domestic filter (from a plumbers merchant), to the cold water feed, and change it annually.

HTH,

Jock. :)

I have the nature pure system fitted, but be aware the filters are now are£109 each. We drink straight from the tap and have not had any problems in 15 years.

We have a 90L fresh tank underslung but I wouldn’t drink from that even with a filter.

So we also have a 15L container under the sink (ala Greg Virgoe) , it’s got a wide top and a submersible pump up to a separate tap.

The container is easily removable to be topped up by any drinking water tap, or bottled water if we ever find ourselves desperate.
Result - Always got fresh clean & cheap drinking water on tap.

We fitted the 3M E2/HF10 micro biological filter to our van. Been using this system on our vans for the last 8 years.
You need the head Unit for the filter and replacement filters are circa £50.

This sentence concerns me ' The container is easily removable to be topped up by any drinking water tap ' 🤔
One of the reasons we have a filter starts at the tap, 😲 many taps if they could talk would tell you they have been inside a toilet cassette. :Eeek:
We never turn On a tap without giving it a bacterial spray first. 😀.

I had twelve years working on water mains many years ago, and
the water might look clean........ but 👀🙄😁 Bob.

At Hawes in the Dales in the week, there was only one tap Bob, which without doubt would have been used by some to rinse their cassette.
I use ant-bacterial wipes, even shoving it up the inside with my little finger, for a good wipe round the inside of the spout. Then I flush through before using the tap to fill with fresh.

Canterbury New Dover Rd P&R used to only have one tap, until Mavis got on the case, whereupon a separate fresh water tap was installed. (y)

Cheers,

Jock.

We drink a lot of wine and tea but water we just keep a couple of litre bottles which we fill from taps. Only rarely have to buy bottled. Swmbo only has water to take tablets , of which we both have a multitude.

There is another reason, apart from possible contamination of fresh water to carry separate container of water.
We live in a very soft water area and find when we visit hard water areas we simply cannot drink, even in tea the water.
Therefore before leaving home we fill a 20ltr container from our house tap and if that runs out we will buy bottled water.

Question... do these water filters also take the horrible taste, as well as bugs out of hardwater.????

In answer to your question this is part of the spec for the 3M E2/HF10 filter I have fitted.

The HF10 cartridges offer all the advantages of the E2 cartridges with ultra-fine filter of 0.2 microns for the reduction of up to 99.99% of bacteria, cysts, algae and mould spores, as tested. Reduces chlorine taste and odours.

So they do not remove the mineral taste associated with hard water.... only chlorine!

We live in a hard water area, and definitely notice the difference, both in the taste of the water, and it's affects after boiling, especially for me in my tea as I hate a white scum floating on the top. :(

As said earlier, using the filter is like buying bottled water.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

I bought this filter and filter housing along with this tap and other bits and bobs to install them for just under £100.

Filters last for 12 months and replacements are £35.
