Can anyone who has done this give me an idea. Standard travel cover with Nationwide is 31 days - what would an extra month cost?

Just a rough idea, I know it can vary dependent on medical details. Can't be bothered with phoning and asking at the moment.

Mine was £43.20 for 50 days( single person)

You can go online and do it

Not got an account yet - just trying to decide whether it's worth it over all with all constituent parts taken into account.

For us it’s going to depend on the trade off of no surcharge for the over 70 element versus the extended trip cost for every one taken over 31 days compared to the single annual charge.

For us it's this bit... Longer extensions will be to a maximum of 120 days maximum trip and a return ticket must have been bought prior to upgrading.

hmm... we only tend to do one trip a year over 31 days and thats generally about 2 months . I guess the question is how much is the 120 days going to cost vs. the 60 we would normally do

Before I phone Aviva about trip extesnion has anyone challenged their definition of when a trip starts? We generally spend about 6/7 days making our way down south but Aviva seem to define your trip starting as when you leave home!

I am struglling to understand why that would be given that I don't need medical cover insurance in the UK! I would have thought it should be related to your ferry tickets date of departure and return - any thoughts?

Thanks for that it really comes down to the definition of when the trip starts. I'll keep digging!

We just received a quote for our upcoming trip which is 55 days, 2 of us age 57/55 with 2 minor issues in the last 12 months, cost was just over £50 for both of us.

Posted this yesterday in (yet) another Nationwide Insurance thread.

"Just priced up 80 day cover in Europe, with some medical issues, all under control.

Nationwide (Aviva) want £485, been with Nationwide for over twenty years (it's nearly doubled) and this is taking the pee... filled in their feedback form telling them so.

Got and excepted a quote from https://www.totaltravelprotection.com/ same cover £263.34.

Just to add, Le Shuttle wanted a similar amount to Aviva".

Do you need to tell them you spend several days travelling south to the ferry? I would be inclined to just tell them the date of the sailing!

Depends if you want to claim, if you have a large claim they will look into the fine detail, if their criteria states from home, and you have declared from ferry, it will be cause to decline.

Wh05apk I agree completely but I am going to take them to task over it and nationwide as it is profiteering. The cover should relate to the ferry dates not when you leave home.

So if you’re half way down the M1(or whatever) and you break your leg then you’re quite happy to lose the cost of your trip?
Good point, so if you have already prebooked and paid for 60 nights on expensive sites at €60 a night they will cover that and the £1,000 ferry Crossing to Spain.

Some interesting points raised - with food for thought. Not sure whether the insurance would cover you for those pre-booked costs - be interesting to see how that would pan out!

Don't see why not, no different to paying for a package holiday?

In February this year I had to cancel return ferries to/from Spain, (booked months in advance) due to clashing with medical treatments.

Nationwide/Aviva did eventually pay out the full amount minus the excess, (£100).

Nothing was booked with Aviva prior to this.

Wait till you get into your 70's, we just paid £1400 for 8 wks visiting Vietnam, Cambodia, Australia and Thailand.
That was after exhausting phones to just about everyone that offers insurance.
