I have a Synology ds418 NAS,I use it mainly for storage of photos, music etc , plus laptop backups.

The software offering is not the most user friendly, I really did like the old windows home server.

Any suggestions as to what software I can download and use?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean.

Are you talking about software on your PC to interface with the Synology for viewing photos etc?

The Synology NAS comes with it's own software which you can't really do much about.

It's a bit clunky, but you do get used to it.

The only other thing I can think is that you're looking for something that will help automate backup to the NAS?

There's a good article on that here which might be of help?

I use Freenas for my NAS system.
Nice and nearly user friendly.

Edit to say that its now known as Truenas

Loved WHS.

Now have a Qnap but not very user friendly.

On the nas I would install synology drive which then allows you to use it like dropbox and have files on your smartphone and PC sync.

Another good app for the synology is moments which gives you auto photo backup of photos from your smartphone to the nas, similar to what dropbox and Google offer.

Both these apps are like dropbox and Google drive but you get the massive data storage of your nas for free whereas Dropbox/Google only give you a few GB for free.
