`Charged up my battery couple of days ago, went to put it in my bike yesterday and it wouldn't slot in, looking closely the battery appears to have blown, it is 3mm wider than the space it goes into.
Have had it suggested that i modify the carrier to get it in, personally i don't want my rear end to catch fire, my legs to get burned or worse.
Someone who should know better thinks it will be 'fine' an engineer should know better, his son has tried to convince him of the dangers.
The bike manufacturer is showing somewhere that fixes the batteries, but it still wouldn't go in the carrier, am sure the metal wont shrink 😉
Advice please kind people preferably sensible but I don't mind a bit of a laugh. Might go and ask the BOT 🤣

I would be very wary, these contain a number of smaller batteries (numbers dependent on what voltage you require) and it sounds as if, at least, one has blown!

Sounds like a time-bomb to me.
Any change like you describe would tell me to keep well clear and get a new one (or rebuild).

I think ticking time bomb and dispose of asap. If it did catch fire, who knows the damage it will cause and what would burn down as a result.

No short cut or cash saving solutions, you need to get it replaced...as for disposal of the faulty one, that in itself can be challenging....make this a priority...move it away from wherever you live for your own peace of mind and safety.

Lots of scary videos of the batteries catching fire and almost impossible to extinguish. Scary really, that man can make such a lethal battery and get away with killing people 🤷🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️

Swelling means it's probably lost a significant proportion of its power and energy storage.

It's unlikely to catch fire. But it is more likely now. I'd be a bit more cautious around it. Don't leave it next too your only exit on something highly flammable. Make sure your smoke alarm is working. Plan to dispose of it soon. Most household recycling sites take batteries.

What bike is it? ( I don’t mean watt bike lol)

I would be tempted to store it well away from the van and get a new one or that one rebuilt with new cells if there is somebody who can do that.

If the battery has expanded it shows the battery is nearing the end of its useful life anyway. New battery time I'm afraid.
Battery is dated 2010 it’s in the house. Think on hindsight although not well used has lasted well

It's an AS their web site is saying they dont have replacement batteries will need to think of something else however John thinks the casing has shrunk back o_O will try to put it in the bike today if it goes, will have it recelled. I do like the bike and need to get some of my fitness back.
thanks all was not happy about just trying to adjust the frame so the faulty battery fitted. He's a right hoarder hats to dispose of anything if he thinks it can be used again.

Do not use it again. Keep it 2 metres away from the van and dispose of it at a recycling facility letting them know.

Personally I wouldn’t fit it back in the bike, it’s just too risky.

Just do an internet search on the subject "New York bicycle fires" to see why you need to get some distance 'twixt you and that battery . . .

If it fits now then could you use the bike until the battery is flat, on a stand if possible, so you can then store it safely until you get it re-celled?

My worry is if you run it like that, that itself may trigger combustion as it heats up during use (loading on the motor).

Having dealt with RC helicopter batteries I would put your battery into a bucket of salty water to discharge it then take it to the local tip for disposal. Not worth the risk.

I go along with don't risk it. Although it is probably unlikely to catch fire if it does they are very difficult to put out. I would dispose of it ASAP.

AS Bikes put me on to this firm who re-cell batteries, as it happened AS had the older size I needed.
It's the older type i need too, have emailed them, know they are at a show so not expecting a reply for a couple of days.

TDub49 will be showing to john when he gets back from golf.

Recelling is not technically difficult usually. However sending a faulty lithium battery through the postal network is a no no too. Too much risk with it being transported and put through multiple sorting systems. Get advice first, but I would carefully remove the cells. You will then see how to rebuild it. Parts are not too expensive. However I undetstand that soldering scare some folk.

If you're feeling adventurous, you could disassemble it. It's probably made of standard sized cells that you can replace... with some tab soldering. There's lots of guides on the internet. My dad re-celled his Raleigh eBike. You could also isolate the bad cells, which would reduce the risk.

If you're really paranoid, put it in a bucket of sand.

Really sorry you have an issue, the recomndation is to only fit batteries from the manufacturer and only use chargers supplied

dont want to stoke the scare stories but....don't put it back in the bike....

E-bike batteries have caused 200 fires in New York: ‘Everyone’s scared’

New York City leans on public for help with e-bike crackdown after deadly fires

Just to update, if I haven't already, AS bikes returned my call on the Monday morning, advised to dispose of the battery safely, they have new ones on order but not due for 6-8 weeks will let me know when they arrive. Hopefully here before our next big trip, although we will more than likely take the 🏍️ instead. John can now stand on one leg on the operated side, so should be up to holding bike up as i get on and off, providing my hip and knee work ok 🤣🤣
