Only 4 months!
can anyone tell me how to acquire a pass to allow me to use European toll roads and pay automatically. It looks to me like 3 1/3 tonnes and under 3 metres is the limit? Cheers.

Pay by credit card at every toll. It might ( the auto toll robot I mean) be kind to you and think your a class 2 Camping car....... Kerrching:)
Or it might not....... KERRCHING :(

I’d take that chance.

And welcome to fun. Where sarcasm and intelligence sometimes meet :)

You can get the toll tag from Sanef (https://www.saneftolling.co.uk/) - if you’re crossing by Eurotunnel there’s a deal on (https://www.saneftolling.co.uk/Eurotunnel-Le-Shuttle-Offer-Landing-Page)

You’re right that the tag is only supposed to be used for vehicles up to 3500 kg mgw and 3.0 m high, but when you apply you’re not specifying a vehicle. And people do report using them successfully for larger vans.

If you want to be totally clean, I think that https://www.eurotoll.eu/our-offer/france/ provide tags for larger vehicles, but at a higher price.

Wow. Thanks for the welcome folks and loads of useful info. Much appreciated. We invade Europe in the middle of September! Really looking forward to the adventure. X

not really for me to express an oppinion as we are under both weight and height but i think i too would not bother with a sanef, and just stay with the paying as and when , apart from the ocasional queues its quite easy and you can hope you are class 2 and not be paying for 3 if you dont need to.

I’m in France at the moment in a 3.1m tall, 4t van. We haven’t bothered with a tag, not really worth it unless you’re there for a long time.

We •should• be class 3 as we are over 3m tall. About half the time the toll booths register us as Class 2. The other half of the time they come up as Class 3, but on this and every other trip we’ve done to France, press the enquiry button and a quick “Bonjour, Je suis un Camping Car de Class Deux” has got it changed instantly to Class 2 with no complaint.

Worth doing - it’s about 40% cheaper!

Not sure what happens with tag axle vans (2 axles at the rear)- I think they do have to go through as a higher toll class

I think the only thing that triggers Class 3 is being over 3m high and breaking a light beam on the toll booth - but even then, as I said above, they change it to Class 2 with no query when you press the enquiry button.

One thing I have noticed is that attended booths seem to have disappeared - they’re all automated now, even those that take cash

Obviously it’s a matter of individual choice, but for us it is well worth it, particularly if you can get one via the Eurotunnel offer, so avoiding initial charges. You only pay for months you use it (plus of course the tolls) and it avoids passenger having to reach over to pay, with attendant risk of dropping coins on the ground! We generally only use toll autoroutes for short stretches round cities like Tours, but it still works for us.

I think so, apart from a few toll points near Calais, which I think have left and right sided machines (?)

We pay as you go
at the Toll booth
If it comes up more than Class 2 simply press the button and explain to the
operator you are a camping car
and they always reduce it down to Class 2

In that case I assume a solo traveller would be required to leave their seat?..
I'm a solo traveller and still fit enough to get out and pay (debit card). Takes less than 30 secs and gives the legs a stretch.
Anyway, where's the rush?
