We tried a trailer and found it hard work, have buddy riders now where the weight of the dog is over the crossbar. They only take dogs upto about 10kg but are fine for our cavashons.
I hired one in Germany last year prior to buying and found it was such a a job to control at slow speed even behind a electric bike decided not to buy one also friends have one and there dog will not settle in it.
We had one for the kids, it was Halfords own and took 2 of them. When they were 4 and 2 they started to be a bit too heavy for me to pull uphill. A year later and I had to get something different.
It had quick release wheels and was well made. I even turned it over once by accident and the belts meant they were just upside down and loving life.
One thing to check is the attachment on the bike. It would fit a quick release axle but not the newer maxel (I think that’s what it’s called) quick release fitting.
Our Croozer has done around 10,000km now, probably 20% of that off road. And that’s with 2 x 20kg dogs in it. Some spare parts needed here and there but it still works really well.
Croozer is a decent brand from Germany but available in the UK, well made and designed, also quite a few sizes to choose from.
We have a Doggyhut for ou 16kg maleTibetan Terrier and Buddyrider for our 9kg female TT. I think there is a weight limit for the Buddyrider of around 10 or 12kg.
Temu/Ali express may be your cheapest friend, we bought an XL one off a dutch website pre b word and it was half the price of the UK , now will have import duties etc, may be worth waiting if you are going abroad or a friendly funster can collect for you or depending how small dog is you can get a handlebar mounted dog cage
