I’ve been doing this for some 18 years and, on the odd occasions that I use ramps, always drive forward onto them. I’ve noticed that lots of French people reverse onto them. Apart from the gear ratio difference is there any advantage either way. What is the consensus? Am I missing something? Is it just a French thing?

Utilising the prevailing ground slope is the best way, if possible. If not, I'd be be trying to save the clutch and engage the bottom of the ramps gently rolling forwards and maintain that gentle speed up the ramp, softly softly, catchy monkey 🤷

Always forward as 1 st gear is a low lower than reverse so much less strain on the clutch, not so much of a problem with a torque converter full auto box.

When we used ramps previously, if wild camping, I always always reversed on to them, and left the seat in the driving position. If I needed to leave in a hurry for some reason, it meant I was straight off with a quick shimmy of the steering to the right or left, thereby avoiding the ramps with the rear wheels and leaving them behind. 👍

On a Rally Field or on a Site, it would depend upon the level of the pitch whether I drove on, or reversed on.

Our ramps were not these huge Milenco Quantum honeycomb jobs you see crumbling under the weight, but good solid ramps man enough for up to 7.5t.

Cheers,

Jock. :)
