Hi, can anyone tell me the best equipment for getting better wifi in my motorhome. It's something I'm not too well clued up on and don't want to break the bank?
Thanks in advance

I used to have a Nighthawk mifi with a poynting external antenna, but to be honest, I had just as good a signal using the hot-spot on my phone or tablet. The tablet was better because it has a larger inbuilt antenna. I regularly have 2 phones and a firestick connected to the hot-spot with no problems. Your 4g connection is the critical part. Crappy signal leads to crappy wifi.

I have 2 of these, use one as a spare or keep charged to swop batteries if needed, but haven’t had to yet. SWMBO also streams for her FaceTime with her work etc. 100GB of data that rolls over, streams Netflix etc and can be taken wherever I need it.

I‘ve thought about mounting one on the roof, but they ain’t cheap and while this gives me everything I need and is so portable, I’ll stick with it. SIM easily changeable too 👍🏻

I use one of these with a Poynting antenna on the roof . I power the router of a stabilised 12volt supply.

Motorhome wifi for me as well.
A good company and they arrange a good fitting.

But if you are somewhere with zero or minimal mobile phone coverage then it can not polish a turd.
2 bars of 2G mobile coverage will not get you much in the way of wifi even for looking things up.
You really need at least 4 bars of 4G coverage outside to get the same inside and enable proper browsing.

If you use a lot or professionally then Starlink is the way to go

Ignore all the stuff about 5G.
The number of campsites with 5G coverage in the UK in the next few years may extend to both hands. It will come eventually, but 6G may be here before that.

I think 4g is enough for most. Do you agree?

4G is enough.

5G will only exist in the centre of larger cities for now.
5G will extend to smaller towns eventually, but it may never get as far as the typical rural campsite.

Mobile coverage in the UK is very patchy.
Snowdonia is a classic example. Almost no coverage at all in the valley's
The area has a low resident population, but a main road that takes over 100,000 people a day and tens of thousands of holiday makers in the B&B's and campsites and walking on the hills and mountains.
All without a mobile signal.

Here is the coverage map.
Almost blank

Thanks, I used hotspot whist in Cornwall last 2 weeks and it was fine, just a few sites that it did not work.

Another one for Motorhome WiFi I have a EE SIM card in it (from a little MiFi unit) and it just works, in U.K., in Europe (any country) I can gift it data from our contracts, it’s great, it’s never not connected or not worked👍👍
Oh and it’s really easy once set up, fit and forget👍

Sorry, I don’t actually know, mine came from the electricity board. As they were cutting off the power for some time, they sent me them in the post, along with the SIM card, I just needed to activate it or pop one of my own in.

Think you can buy them quite easily and a quick search online….

Motorhome Wifi

I have always used the above. Not necessarily the cheapest bit great kit, just works and good advice all round from Adam
Hello, we have had a Motorhome Wifi fitted recently to our motorhome.

Can you advise what sim card you use for abroad? Many thanks.

We have the same router which has been great so far.
I wouldn't bother with a roof antenna.
Honestly this is not great advice based on sites we visit. The difference is "working" versus no signal.
Friend has same ZTE router (very close) that came with our motorhomewifi. Parked next to us, us getting 20Mbit, them, 2 or nil when we tested. In end we gave them OUR vans login as they were complaining!

But it depends on which sites you visit. Middle of town sites, St Neots UK, say Gt Yarmouth (both CAMC), ie places where your phone gets 4 or 5 bar, you'll get similar performance completely agree. Cromer sites and when we went to the forest of dean site Bracelands ... you just won't get a (usable) signal without a roof antenna, ie, places where your phone has 0 signal or 1 bar. Those sites, our phones speedtest at 0.25M the motorhome wifi at 10-15M

Given for us, the flexibilkity of on-demand TV to be able to not watch things in real time -> it makes a big difference.

Thinking of going down a similar route and interested on how you provide the router with "stabilised 12volt supply"?
