Why do owners of motorhomes complain when spares are so expensive. if you spent equivalent motorhome money on a similar value car, wouldn't you expect spares to be equally expensive ?
Try owning a boat or motorbike, you'll find it's just the same.

Car, boat and motorbike owners don't also complain? Are they even human?

Some of the spare costs are, however, quite outrageous. One can understand it. It's a low volume industry with many different spares and whoever has to carry (or more probably import) a spare incurs significant costs.

My current thinking is that it's possibly best to remain as generic as possible. Ducato panel van. Standard windows and skylights such as are widely used in the industry, and so on.

Most car spare parts these days are the same extortionate. They have reduced inventory so that it is easier for them & increased the waste Ford now has to be one of the worst.

😆😆😆😆 That's almost as bad as one of old Mo's jokes!

Did you miss Northernraider spitting feathers about his alternator cost etc. He'd be mightily hurt to think he was letting his Scottish forefathers down by not complaining! 🤣

A lot of MH manufacturers buy in many parts from sub-contractors, but an owner of their product requests a spare they order it and charge a mark-up way beyond a reasonable handling charge.

I suggest that Jim starts up a directory of known sub-contractors who will supply parts directly at their prices without the mark-up.

It’s the lack of quality for the high price that I hate, and complain about.

Aviation the same, the supplier says it is because every part is 100% inspected rather than a random check. A light aircraft company asked their alternator supplier what would be the failure rate if the opted to fit automotive products. They were told the automotive trade demanded a lower failure rate than the aviation item, so would be a better choice but it was dearer even before the 100% inspection cost was included.

It's the same with car & van prices, most are generic but change the badge and the price goes through the roof. A VW Caddy Maxi diesel is Ford Ecoblue powered built by Skoda in Poland, stick a blue oval on it and it's over £3k cheaper... even the interior is the same.

It's the same with motorhomes, 99% of them have thetford toilets & fridges etc, they're generic group builds. In reality all you're paying a premium for is the bonnet badge and the UK is the worlds largest sucker for a bit of badge snobbery, the manufactuers know it and exploit it.

Is your head turned by a shiny Mobilvetta K Yacht? it's simply a more expensive Roller Team Pegaso built on the same production line. Zero difference in quality but a £10 - £15k premium on the price.

It's only the very expensive N&B's, Carthago liners & Morelo's which are different.

Recently had our domestic oil fired boiler serviced and had new new jet fitted. This comprised of largish brass body with pressed metal jet insert (with hole). I looked up price of this complete unit - £8. I then looked up the price of a Dometic jet insert only (identical to domestic jet item, but smaller) and that was £20.

I am glad you added that last line, but they are not very expensive secondhand bought privately - I know. :giggle:
