I am wanting to swap over to some winter wheels/tyres I have bought and have a question about jacking points. For the rear I can see these squares either side so I kind of assumes these were them. Long way up though so not great for my trolley jack. Is that what they are for? Alternatively can I jack it up from under the axle?

Where possible, always jack under the axle as it is designed to carry the whole vehicle weight and also the jack doesn’t need to lift the suspension sag. Always as near to the spring mounts as possible and not the centre as that may be just pressed steel without any resistance to crushing.
Edit to say that the galvanised steel in your photo looks like it’s a body support and will not be suitable for jacking.
