Our new motorhome is due to arrive in early July and I am now starting to consider how we can best transport our 2 bikes.
I am trying to avoid having a bike rack on the back of the vehicle so we are now considering what solutions we can come up with that utilises the space of the internal garage. We have to accept that the bikes will need to be transported without a front wheel off but I was wondering what solutions other people have used. I have done some research and a chap in Trumptown as come up with this fantastic slide out solution.

Any ideas would be welcomed.

What is your van? what type of garage? I have a quick release bracket for the front forks of the tandem fastened to the far wall of the garage and then just a rope around the back rack to a frame that is there for the chairs, if the scooter is in the way of fitting the mountain bikes in properly I might just stand them up with an old duvet in between and that works well.

It’s a Dethlefft t7057dbm, the garage is 85cm high by 93 wide. I think it’s a good space to work with.

We ride our bikes when it's raining so figure it's no different on the back of the campervan, just take the saddles off and put tape over the hole they came out of. Include security cables and we're off :)

Why not just lay the bikes on their sides, with an old thin matress or some old blankets betwen them? No need to remove wheels then .

Do you only use the rad fazz. It could save a load of hassle if that’s all the bikes need to keep safe and secure.

I won’t have space for a mattress. We have a inflatable canoe, cadac, 2 chairs, fishing rod, possible spare and plenty more stuff. I don’t think we have the luxury of a mattress. Thanks anyway.

Yes. Just that. Bungee the wheels to the frame protected with those foam floor mat tiles. The rail attaches to the floor then adjustable fork holders keep the bikes upright and secure.

Fully understand why you don't want to use a rack.. not only for keeping them safe from being stolen, but for getting them filthy ..

Fiamma do a slide out rack, which may be suitable..

Fortunately we have a larger garage and I made a rack using two Fiamma rails..

Road spray is a lot different from riding in the rain.. which we also do, but not by choice.
A rack is fine for cheap bikes not one wants to nick, but with expensive mountain or road bikes like we have, you want them hidden and out of the road spray and filth.. .. I've had two stolen from the rack, that was main reason for buying a van with a garage.

I've just had an idea of a way to make a double use item ...

Have a way to fix it to the garage floor with clamps/bolts so that it still slides out fasten the bikes to it then slide it back in and secure it ... then if you actually need a ladder you've got one!

Wouldn't take a lot to make it work ...

:)
