Motorhome Depot – Dodgy Dealers

4 years ago we traded in our last van - we were more than happy with the trade in price and the deal on the new van. We had use of the old van and the option to sell privately before the new van arrived. We did advertise privately but after a couple of very silly low offers and a lot of tyre kickers decided it was far less hassle to just trade in.

The dealer sold our van within a week at a couple of grand more than the trade in so everyone was happy. There was nothing at all wrong with the old van - we bought the new one as circumstances had changed and we needed more berths. We'd had the timing belt replaced and it had been serviced at Fiat Professional before the trade in but the dealer told us not to have the MOT done as they would do that for the new owner and they did a hab check whilst we were still on the premises sorting the new van.

That dealer has always been exceptionally good in our experience and worth the long trip (for us) to near Derby and home, although not this year of course.

I have a feeling head office would have no idea and you’ve basically been scammed by the individual.
They actually take any payments, when we were looking to buy through them and smelled a rat with the whole deal, the franchise guy we dealt with refused to return our deposit, so I had a written word or two with the HQ pointing out the cooling off period ect and guess what, our deposit was returned.
They know exactly what their frani's are doing.

We used Motorhome depot, very pleased with the service, he offered us a minimum price and we ended up with £500 more, can't grumble at that, then got £3000 knocked off the price of our new van, win win in our eyes.

I think it depends on the individual franchisee ( if thats a word). Our dealer was very fair . After a few issues made us a compensatory offer which we accepted.

Further to my last about Motorhome Depot. The local chap turned up to have a chat before I committed to sell through them.
I only bought this (new to me) van in March this year, two weeks before the lockdown. I thought I had a great deal at £39k as it had stacks of extras fitted by the last owner, Solar, Satellite, blinds oven you get the idea.
Well, according to MHD he would pitch it for sale at £39,999 with a return to me of £37k, so a starting loss of £3k, ok so far. Apparently all the extras do not affect the base price.
Then it starts, “Have you had a recent habitation service and/or engine service/mot. I said it was due engine service and mot, both getting done this week, but no habitation service as yet.
He says without habitation it would most probably knock another grand off due to buyer confidence. So I’m looking at 36k now. £4K loss in a year.
Due to the present climate and we still love our van, I declined their kind offer and will use it for a few years yet.
If sell in the future I will sell privately, as when you demonstrate to a buyer your pride and joy you (If you are open and honest) show how good our hobby is.
