motorhome carpets - bit pants really - anyone replaced with rubber?

As thread title, most carpets in our moho's seem a bit, well, pants!

whilst i appreciate they get heavy use and furbert doesn't help........ has anyone either fitted aftermarket 'tailored rubber mats'

or

bought a roll of the rubber and made their own?

im considering doing the latter, just wondered what other peoples view on both options is?
dont want to fit carpet ones, certainly in cab as ive already worn through where my heel rests! (swmbo not impressed!)

We took our Hymer carpets out and I bought a remnant of carpet, used original carpets as patterns to cut remnant, had remnant bound and bingo! New carpet.
We took the front-cab-carpet out completely.

I went to B&M, bought a shed load of Carpet tiles and fitted them. They can be removed and power washed if really marked and if they get really bad individual tiles can be replaced.

I know it doesn't help with your rubber question but we've found a place in Durham that will replace all five of our whipped-edge carpet pieces for £80.

I've seen them being made and it is quite fantastic to watch. She has dozens of colours to choose from.

Buy some Gel carpet from ebay. It is very hard wearing and can be cut and does not need the edges to be bound. We did our motorhome for about £60. You clean it with a hose and dry it in the sun.

Quality Laminate? Seriously?. I did the Kitchen Area in my Last R-V with it and the Bathroom.

Vinyl flooring for us.. practical and hygienic, easy to sweep out and wipe over.. carpets were in the van garage unused when we bought the van, they now live in the loft.

@skylinersi If replacing the flooring consider Vinyl self adhesive planks .. from about £10 sq mt in Wikes.. easy to lay, hard wearing and economical..

example.. they have different wood colours in store.

We removed ours and put into loft for storage. Much easier to keep clean now especially with a dog. Just brush the floor with occassional mop when required.
Only use van at weekends and a few week breaks. Much simpler than keeping carpet. If I was full timing or using for several months can see the benefit to make it feel more homely.

I would totally disagree with that - in my experience Carthago fitted carpets with no fixing down whatsoever in the habitation area are Great!! They can be swept or picked up very easily -do not move around or crease - look good - feel good - and washed with detergent by hand. A great extra!!

My ‘child’ is German and has four feet, my husband has lots of hair and size 9’s. mind you he has less hair than he used to.

In every. MH we've had (3 of them) we've replaced carpet with cushioned vinyl flooring.
Just use the carpet as the template for the vinyl, then store the carpet pieces at home.
Works really well for us.
Piece of cake to brush or clean with flooring wet wipes. Doesn't stain, water does not soak in.
If/when it eventually becomes worn or tears, just replace with more.
Then finally sell van with lovely as- new clean carpets if the buyer wants them.

I don't know what the material they use for the carpets in our Carthago is called but it's fantastic stuff. Lifts out and shakes clean, vacuums up no problem and doesn't show any dirt. It's a sort of thick cord and looks/feels great.

If you go down the rubber route, be wary that it can smell for ages.

I bought a roll of rubber flooring from a Machine Mart as I needed to line the “estate” part of my Land Rover. No problems cutting it or making it fit but despite following internet advice to stop it smelling, it was really whiffy for about 6 months.

Eventually it did go.

We didn't order carpet with our current van, we didn't even unwrap the one for the previous van so felt it an unnecessary extra.

We use loose mats from Dunelm, rubber backing so non slip, and washable in the machine.

So would I. we are very happy with the carpets in our Rapido, new in 2008 but still as good as new and unmarked after much use. I imagine the OP is only referring to his experience only.

We have used old carpet squares from our house renovation,worked a treat, and even though "I" had fitted them,they did not move....Result. The Growler loved it,but, Jennifer was unimpressed..
