Hi friends we are going away for a month and the motorhome will be left on our drive, which is secure.
My question is whether I should leave it on EHU which is not a problem as the cable easily passes under the locked garage door.
Is it alright to leave it hooked up like that for a month unattended?
I have a solar panel and there is nothing draining the batteries, other than a tracker.
Do you think it would be ok just to leave it and rely on the solar panel and of course the weather rather than on hook up?
Unfortunately I don’t have anybody who could go round and turn the EHU on say weekly, but is this really necessary?
I’m sure there are plenty of owners who have their motorhomes in storage, do you leave yours and just rely on solar?
I could buy an automatic timer at the supply point, how often should I have it coming on and for how long?
The vehicle is a 2022 Fiat Ducato, the cab battery was recently checked and was given a clean bill of health.
My tracker tells me the state of the battery daily so I can check that so that’s not a problem.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

We never hook up rely solely on solar. Do you have a battery master to keep engine battery topped up?

No battery master but there is, I understand the Adria equivalent connected via the Electroblock.
You will have gathered I know nothing!
I was told the solar system charges both batteries as and when required.

We rely on solar when in storage, no problems even with tracker and alarm

For just a month, either left on the ehu or not will be fine. Only an issue for periods of 2 months or more in my experience.

One of my requirements when deciding on solar set up was to be sure that the van could be safely stored away from power. I had separate panels, 100w for engine battery and balance for domestics so it is self sufficient even in the depths of winter.

If your tracker tells you there is a problem o day three of your trip away......

I would leave it on a timer, an hour a day!

In summer I leaave mine off hook up and the solar charges.
In winter I have it on the mains with a plug in timer switching it on for 30 mins a day.

2022 it will have a smart charger.
The battery will only absorb whatever charge it needs.
Leave hookup connected.

I would buy 2 optimate maintainers. One for each battery, they are low power (0.8amps) so cannot start a fire if the battery develops a shorted cell or any other fault for that matter. 👍

Ours has just been left on the drive for six weeks. Nothing on. Relied on solar (120w) Went out a week ago and it was fine.

If you have this EBL check in block 3 if you have the missing wire in this photo below.
If you have a wire there, it will also be charging the vehicle's battery.
You'll probably have an NDS sun controller, then.

If the solar is charging the engine battery as well as the leisure then see no need for ehu. mine is like this (via battery master) all the time and all batteries are always pretty much topped up, even on non sunny days. personally I wouldn't want unnecessary electrical stuff on and connected if away. Just one more thing to potentially go wrong. If its not needed don't use it.
