MoT Amnesty Announced

We decided last week to sorn the camper and bikes but car is/was booked in for service/mot on the 20th April, tax due 1st May. So sensible decision I think.

I wonder whether the Amnesty will be recodnised/accepted by authorities outside the UK.

If under the Amnesty one is driving outside the UK it might be as well to carry a copy of the official announcement with one's MOT Certificate.

Geoff
Good news for those storing their vans abroad if their mot runs out in the next few months.

Did he? Where did you get this information? The official .gov site on this says “If your vehicle tax is due, you can tax your vehicle as soon as your MOT due date has been updated” which clearly implies that the tax is still payable.
Yes, once the MOT due date has been updated to reflect the extra 6 months you can tax the vehicle - you cannot do that if the vehicle record remains showing the vehicle untaxed. I do not thin that extraglide wa querying whether the vehicle had an extra 6 months added to the VED sutuation aas that has not been mentioned anywhere

Did the car on Monday. It was not due to 1st April have I lost six months free MOT or the probability when you test it will be backdated to the old expiry. Van due by 1st June so that will go over

All Cars Vans and motorcycles, this Amnesty will continue until further notice
Needs more verification Geo .

From 30 March 2020, MOT due dates for cars, motorcycles and light vans will be extended by 6 months.

That's vans up to 3500kg or are they using the class 4 classification regardless of weight.

Just for you John. if it goes to an mot station for a test its included in the amnesty.
If its normally tested by the DVSA at their nominated(Borrowed) test facility for its test (plating as it was known) it is subject to it's own 3 month amnesty

Just to ask a weird question, cos I am like that.

My MH MOT is due mid April, so I don't have to bother getting it done till Mid Oct as things stand.

But what if I found a garage open mid April, took the MH to it for an MOT and it failed the MOT ?

You wouldn't be able drive it but why would you want to get it tested.

Just to clarify
If it failed you would knowingly be driving a defective vehicle, and that will get you into very hot water. It should of course be repaired and re tested.

And why would he test in April, to try and avoid a very very very very long wait for an apointment when the Amnesty ends or in October which ever comes first
Make no bones about it, an awfull lot of folk are going to be very annoyed when the little light bulb in the brain eventually lights up
Remember there is no such thing as a free lunch

Would you class that as essential travel

There will not be an abrupt end as every MOT is extended 6 months, so the spacing between each vehisles MOT is the same as now but 6 months later. E.G mine was 31st July 2020 and will now be 31st Jan 2021.

On paper I agree

Surely the government will have worked this out and MOT requirements will be staggered to reduce any massive backlog.

I missed out - MOT due 27th March. Was booked in for today but I cancelled - did not want anyone in my van so SORNed it today. I can't see being allowed to use it for 3 months (or more) anyway.

Stay home - Stay safe

Glad I held off, both van and car due in next couple of weeks, so I was in two minds, but hung on hoping sense would prevail. For once it did -- I rarely back the right horse, but this time I did :-)

You can’t get tax without an mot but you can go to a pre arranged mot without tax

My interpretation of the government announcement is that they will be adding 6 months to your MOT expiry date (if due after March 30), which means that when you come to tax it, you will be regarded as having a valid MOT. Obviously it will take a little while for the dates on the system to be updated to reflect the 6-month extension, but then we should be good to renew the tax.

Can I just add if you think your vehicle might fail an mot and you get stopped or god forbid have a serious accident.
They will throw the book at you.

Just saying ?

I'd like to think most people would be sensible enough not to drive a dodgy vehicle, but then I am reminded about the guy stopped by cops in Australia who had no steering wheel and was using mole grips to steer with :)

My mate is a mechanic and you’d be surprised what he’s told me about vehicles he’s worked on ?

we often get vehicles for mot where the tyres have the cords showing so have been illegal for a long time, unfortunately a lot of people will see the exemption as a bonus putting off the mot so they dont have to spend any money, ironically a lot of the tyres we fail would have lasted many thousands of miles more if the tracking had been done so they did not wear the edges out

We decided to SORN the motorhome, MOT was due on 17th March but, I hardly see that as being important enough to risk spreading any infection.
Shame really as the old girl is all suited & booted for her MOT & is in remarkable condition for a 25yr old vehicle.
