I was chatting with a ‘soon to be’ new Morelo owner earlier in the week, and he is really struggling to find any insurance company that will offer cover.

I suggested NFU as they are my insurer. However, they subsequently declined, and he has also drawn a blank with Adrian Flux. I know from previous experience that lots of insurers have upper value limits that may not extend to a new Morelo, Concorde, Dethleffs, N+B or the like and was just wondering who everyone else uses.

He is 61 with 12 years No Claims history and plenty of experience on large vehicles. Surely somebody must want to take his money!!

I was lucky when I purchased mine, ordered it and paid the deposit rang around for insurance and nobody would cover it due to the value😳😳
NFU asked if I had insurance with them but I didn’t but would let them quote on my rentals when it came up so they said ok.
They came up with a reasonable quote considering this is my first van.
And when my rental came up they were cheaper than the current insurance company, that surprised me as previously I had asked NFU for a quote on my pickup truck and they were miles out.

Good luck and tell your mate to ring NFU in Chichester as not all branches are interested in insuring vans.

Oh right….I assumed that the underwriters were common to all branches. Mine is through the Bury St Edmunds office and I referred him there.

They are individual franchises free to choose who they insure.

Thats good to know, I will tell him to try Chichester then for hopefully a more positive outcome. I may have been lucky as an existing NFU customer - I just did a change of vehicle and paid the extra premium.

Insurance is just gambling. It could be on a particular make especially if expensive that a few claims make it look a poor bet or one they're only going to cover at a big premium.

I think he is expecting a big premium to be fair - but a flat refusal is the frustrating part!

I think the existing customer bit help no end, before we bought our Palace we placed the Flair and a car with the NFU in readiness, no problems when we came to change.

Good strategy - and actually, exactly what I did too !

I was thinking I may have a problem and put the Hymer with NFU in readiness for the change. I have also had my house insurance with them for 10 years and a couple of other small policies that probably demonstrate a good risk.

Back in the good old days, you were exempt from compulsory motor insurance if you had £100k in the bank.

I remember that from my law degree course. A long time ago.

I wonder what that is indexed up! Given the size of a potential personal injury claim it would need to be a big sum these days

Multi-million awards of compo for severe injuries had barely begun.

To be honest the idea of not needing insurance if you have a certain amount of capital sounds a bit like toad of toad hall and his driving exploits!

We are full timers and had trouble insuring ours.

We tried NFU, but they declined us, the only 2 companies that would cover us due to value being in excess of £150,000 were Flux and Comfort.

We compared both and Comfort came out 'cheapest', although not cheap, if that makes sense. Maybe Comfort may be an option for a secondary quote?

I am with NFU without a problem but also have my home insurance with them which might help. Might be a postcode issue with his insurers?

Most NFU branches won't do Chichester is one of the few that do.
Thats a good idea. I'm only down the road from Chichester, might pop in and see them. I'm with Comfort at moment and they are fine but I'll probably shop around a bit if my new van ever turns up!

No,you had to deposit the money with the Attorney General.
In the 70's it was 15k and most cash in transit companies used it as they were uninsured due to attacks.
Current amount is 500k deposited with the AG which covers multiple vehicles and you are expected to stump up any additional costs yourself. A bit like being a "name".
Additionally you receive a decent rate of interest on your 500k. Win,win.
