Getting nearer folks, so a few more questions from a first timer if I may!
Insurance, Currently all my insurance, house cars etc are with the NFU, they quoted me about £350, with no limitations on the dreaded front windscreen.
Which club to join?
Which recovery service Uk and EU would you recommend? for our cars we have it with the RAC via the NFU, very reasonable but they do not do EU on that scheme.
Warranty, as I will be buying used (2008) and probably private, I would like to buy a warranty for at least say the 1st 12 months, on-line doesn't appear to offer them for anything older than 10 years, any suggestions?

Try Comfort, a lot of members on here are with them.
Which club depends on how you want to use them. We’re in both as we like CMC CL’s and CCC for the THS’s
Comfort or LV do Europe cover.
You may be struggling to buy a warranty for a van over 10yrs old.

Hi Paul
How do I want to use it, well both UK and Europe I think, we used to tow a caravan in france some years ago, love the rural atmosphere!
I will check with Comfort, is that for both insurance and rescue? thank you.
I understand the 10 year issue, it is why I asked, if I could just get 6 months it takes the initial risk out of buying privately.

My LV quote was good with breakdown cover. Best to p for quotation.

You may be better spending money on a full habitation and vehicle check than on a warranty on a private sale of that age. Warranties will be insurance backed and often have so many exclusions that you are unlikely to be able to claim.

Club wise. I wouldnt join any apart from here of course.
If you want to use THS or CL/CS then could join either or both. If you want sites probably not worth joining either as their prices are similar or more than private sites, which usually have more facilities. Neither club is useful outside the UK except possible deals on ferries or insurance.

I would agree that a warranty insurance is likely not to cover much. If you are not comfortable doing a good look over yourself I would use the money to have a full inspection and a full service.
As for the habitation area get a damp check.

I joined the CAMC for their CLs and made a £110 saving on my m/h insurance vs Comfort who I'd been happy with for 8 years at a competitive premium until they hiked it up last time although I had made no claims or changes to my circumstances.
Quite a few threads on which club to join if you use the 'Search' facility. Here's one of them:

CAMC 'Certified Locations'. Max 5 units on a basic farm or garden centre or private field. Exclusive to members (although some don't check membership apparently).
The CCC call them CS's.

Here's me at an old mill in the New Forest.

Should read phone for quotation.
They have just quoted me £380 for me and her for insurance and recovery, both Uk & EU, best so far!

The vehicle has just got a new MOT and had full service, yes I need a HAB check, I am ok looking over something, but when you do not 'know' a vehicle, a bit of insurance is perhaps a plan, once you have done 500 miles you get a good feel for things, what is working well, what is not is my experience.

You are probably aware that any insurance warranty is likely to cover only major components ( engine and transmission), unlikely to cover electrical or much else.

That is what I would be looking for, all the other stuff I could probably deal with, and these are not likely major 'show stoppers'

I've used Adrian Flux and am currently with Comfort. It's all a question of which company can get you what you want. Adrian Flux were the only ones at the time who would insure my van on a VIN as I was importing it. I stopped using them as we re-valued the van and they would no longer insure without an alarm/tracker, Comfort would. We are selling soon so I wasn't prepared to spend a lot on alarm/tracker.

We are currently with CAMC but will review near to renewal time.

For breakdown recovery I've gone to online comparison sites, however, Comfort included it at a reasonable price. Just make sure you do get European cover if you are intending going over/under the water.

As others have said, is it worth it for a a 2008? probably not. Just have to bite the bullet when/if things go wrong.

The only problem is if something major goes wrong it will cost as much to repair as a 5 year old out of warranty, it may be 15 years old but still not cheap at +/-£40k!

I believe its only dealers who have the option to offer warranty on older vehicles. Our 2008 MH we bought last Jul came with 1 year which we upgraded to 2 years, but after that, we cannot further extend (could only extend even further at point of purchase)

If warranty's a big part for you, then the dealer route may be best but, you will 9/10 pay more for your vehicle plus the £ for the warranty on top

Our warranty via Avantguard has been exceptional, no declined claims for small and larger jobs

If you or someone you know is handy with fixing bits, then you may be as well to swerve the warranty or, if you can afford the fixes via a professional...but you may be OK and have little or no issues

Re the insurance, if you're part of a club such as CAMC or CCC, they usually offer to beat your renewal (or poss quote) by £25

Be careful regarding windscreen cover for my American RV.
Long ago so can't remember who it was but I asked about cover.....no problem, fully covered and no limit.
Yes, no problem claiming but a limit on value which would have struggled to replace my car screen..
They meant no limit on number of claims.

Hi, I am handy enough myself at fixing 'things' but I would not be able to tackle an engine/gearbox/clutch job, those are my only worries, the rest I have no fears.

We're just swapping our van and the warranty we have on the new one is via RAC for 3 years, which the new dealer provides 'foc' on all vans, this warranty seems to cover a lot more even though our current one seemed to as well, but this one covers you abroad and they'll come to you or you can find a garage to have work done (in UK you can return to dealer or go to a vat garage)
Unlimited claims but £500 per claim so we paid £399 to extend this to £1,500 per claim

Have claimed a few times on old van, no issues at all

Just read the t&c's to know what is and what isn't included, which usually means nothing due to wear and tear and only faults engine/cab wise or in the hab area (including fixtures, fittings and operational bits, are)

Hi Elsie, sounds like you bought your van from a dealer? I understand they offer warranty, however they charge much more in the 1st place, I am potentially buying private, walk out the door any problems are mine, a warranty for 6 or even 3 months would allow me to find out any 'major' issues and get them fixed.

£1500 per claim might cover a clutch or injector but unfortunately won’t cover a lot of things especially as the insurance company is likely to insist on its choosing the repair garage.

Yes, both ours from a dealer, even though I know we pay over the odds, us being completely useless with anything other than hanging a picture, it gives us peace of mind.

Check for FSH and don't forget, vans are made robustly to travel much further than cars, although, things can still go wrong however, most expensive part to fix I believe, is the engine, which if its looked after, services etc, you shouldn't hopefully experience any issues

Regarding hab, buy a damp meter, check every part especially where the ceiling joins the wall....ours seemed perfect, no signs of damp, always allowing ventilation etc via opening all cupboards but just found out it's damp and circa £1.5k to repair (not inc in warranty btw) due to seals on the outside having the tiniest crack

Worth investing in a meter....ours was free of damp when we bought it though, this happened more recently

Our current one (Avantguard) and new one (RAC) allow to return to dealer or go to vat reg garage
