Hopefully this post will assist and clarify the Class of a Motorhome, so others don't go through what I can describe is painful.

I took my 71 plate MoHo (Details below) out of storage of we went for its virgin MOT, I explained in advance to the garage to ensure they could accommodate the vehicle as its large etc

They couldn't complete the MOT, due to them stating it wasn't a Class 4 as it was 3,850kg and I needed a specialist testing centre as its a class 5 or 7, not an issue I thought, went online.

I located a few in my area, one very helpful guy queried the class and said it was a class 4, as the Class is based on the MRO (Mass in Running Order e.g. With nothing onboard) and not the MTPLM (Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass e.g. Max weight with all my junk in).
Also, that a Motorhome is not classed a HGV (Class 7 for 3,000-3,500, so discretion on the MRO value can be taken)

Bailey Autograph 79-4F
Overall Body Length 7.931m/26’0”
Overall Habitation Width* 2.422m/7’11”
Overall Height 2.710m/8’11”
MTPLM 3850kg
MRO 3151kg

I rang my local MOT testing place to ask if I could take my motorhome in early for its first Mot as its not due until the end of this month , they said you can but you lose anytime left on your Mot.
You can Mot a vehicle up to 28 days before it's due after the first Mot.

Rather than rely on internet waffle and idiotic garage people, I revert to the published information by our guvnment:

The relevant extract is:

Class 4

Class 4 vehicles can be:

  • cars, passenger vehicles, motor caravans, private hire vehicles, motor tricycles, quadricycles and dual purpose vehicles in all cases with up to eight passenger seats
  • goods vehicles not exceeding 3,000kg design gross weight (DGW)
  • taxis and ambulances with up to eight passenger seats
  • passenger vehicles, ambulances, motor caravans and dual purpose vehicles with nine to twelve passenger seats

Cars, passenger vehicles, motor caravans, private hire vehicles, motor tricycles, quadricycles and dual purpose vehicles in all cases with up to eight passenger seats

They can be category L5, L6, L7, M1 or N1.

Their first test will be required after 3 years.

It's Class 4.
I wonder if the original garage didn't have the lift capacity to raise your motorhome, so hid behind some bs ?

Yeah, and they we're concerned that they couldn't perform the brake test as their rollers could only accommodate 3,000kg

Motorhomes or "motorcaravans" as they are classified are certainly class 4...
I would never use that first garage again...

Mine is 5000kg.... 100% class 4..
First time using them, and bit restricted on garages in the area with large enough facilities. But I've found a Bus MOT station of all places that do Motorhomes, so all good. May see if I can pick up some passengers to pay for the MOT :p
