Hi everyone Steve M here, I failed my test yesterday on riding to slow on the hazard avoidance.
I went through the speed measure at 45km ,they offered me another attempt and I did 47, test guy apologised and asked me to park the bike up and failed me.
He passed me on everything else.
I understand why he failed me as I would be a danger on the road.
My instructor has advised me to have mod 2 training to get me up to speed and then apply again and on to mod 2 test.
Has anyone else failed on being two slow.

Isn't there an emergency stop as part of that? If you don't get up to speed then it would be hard to show control under breaking.

It's also a minimum speed requirement, so you can go faster ;)

Yes you are correct and if you go over you pass with a minor .
I will be doing mod 2 training to get used to the speed.
Problem is I am new to biking and only had the experience in the training area.
Still enjoying the experience even though I failed.

Midlife thing 57 yesterday and was hoping to buy myself a new bike.
So long as I get test passed and new bike for our trip to Spain and France in September

The hazard avoidance, or swerve and avoid in old money, had to be at at least 50kph through the speed trap.

You get 2 goes and if you don't make the speed up he test is over. The same applies to the emergency stop.

If you register at 48 or 49 kph you get away with it with a minor fault.

Yes that what happened and I accept they were right to fail me, I just need practice to get my speed up.
I felt sorry for the guy doing the manual handling he moved it into the box forgot to put the stand down and the bike dropped and he failed

Oh a riding school bike you'd be going some to get faster than necessary out of the bend on a mod 1 test.

The bike is a 650 kawasaki

Yep. The bikes that you can use are chosen for a reason.

To come out of the curve fast enough to be able to get enough power on through the speed trap isn't a foregone conclusion, especially for a learner.

If it was that easy there would be no point in having the test.

Thanks for the info much appreciated and I am learning every day.
When I eventually pass? I will be a safer rider.

Yes.

Part 1 is a pain in the ass. Part 2 is much more fun.

For the swerve and also for the emergency stop you really need to be going fast enough before you get to the curve and then lose as little as possible in the bend. Once you're out of the bend the distance to the speed trap isn't much so get the throttle open.

If you pootle round the curve you've got no chance of getting up to speed.

Exactly what my instructor said and the same comments pootle ,got another lesson on Saturday on the road with him 1to 1 for 2 hours to get my speed up.
Hoping in about 4 weeks I will post about bikes to buy

Hint.

On the swerve once you're through the speed trap you can ease right off the throttle and the actual manoeuvre is easy. Don't brake though.

Sounds very complicated compared to my bike test back in 1974.

Set off left from Arundel place (bottom left) test center
Right into Victoria road
Turn right into Belle vue parade
Turn right onto A64 then right onto Victoria road.
Right again onto Belle vue parade and emergency stop somewhere on route.
Turn right and back onto victoria road then right into Hanover road.
Right on A64 then right again onto Victoria road.
Turn right at lights onto Nothway then right at roundabout (as was) onto A64 and back to test center on Arundel place.
Practical test finished
5 questions and five road signs
Test passed.

You did Belle vue parade twice to allow the tester time to walk there to do the emergency stop...clipboard held out at roadside...stop under control.

Bit of a joke really but that was the test at the time.

Mine was identical - except 1964 in Kendal.

It's cool during the swerve to stand on the pegs and do a rolling burnout. Even cooler to do a rolling stoppie :)

You can also fail your advanced for 'failure to progress'.

My advice after passing your test would be to take an IAM test or go on a Police Aware course, you never stop learning, the more experienced advice the better.

I knew somebody would come out with that (ahem) bollox.

No offence to you.
None taken, but it was the standard excuse for being a crap rider and failing.....and for the test I took you had to be bad to fail.

Many won't believe this but, in my day, the pressure was on the examiner to pass people not fail them. We used to love the prospect of a motorcycle test 9as long as it wasn't raining) as there was a far greater chance of them passing - you didn't see them for almost half of the test and, generally, because they were not (largely) taught by professional instructors they had dmore on road experience and generally better vehicle control. Sitting in a car with a candidate you could not miss the idiotic things they did!

Oh I see I am actually going to SMC in Sheffield to look at bikes.
They have a new 690 duke 7200
Can you recommend dealer with best price

Took mine in 66, drove out and around in a big square, at some point he jumped out, then asked a few questions. Job done, passed.

Don't give up mate :)

I remember to this day the words of my instructor many (many) years ago.

He said, "I'm here to teach you to pass your test. Come back when you've passed and I'll teach you how to ride."

Which I did, quite a few times too, it just got more and more fun!

I'd also second the 'Bikesafe' courses that the police run too (y)
