Hi Everyone,

I have been looking a while for a basic MIFI unit that is unlocked to any network. I've been looking for one that not expensive and one that has ports for an external antenna. Normally we use my data for hotspot but getting fed up of phone battery being used so quickly.

Could you knowledgeable folk please give me some advise on which units (ideally with link to purchase) would suit please and a compatible antenna if possible?

Ideally not much more that £100 all in. Just plug and play not installed.

Many Thanks
James

So you are looking for a 12v unlocked router, cabling and suitable antenna for under £100. Good luck with that one.

I think he said basic mifi rather than router ( presumably without an option for connecting via ethernet). We don't use ours much now and bought it ages ago I think it was about £50 or less but it was locked . There was at the time a link on here to get an unlocking code and it worked fine.

I have a tp link mifi up at my static along with an outside Ariel, had it four years so can’t remember what it cost, but it works well. I have an EE sim in it but the mifi is not locked to it.

How so?
I said MIFI… correct me if my maths are wrong… and that I didn’t want an install so don’t need cabling. But thanks for your helpful reply

Thanks!! Exactly what I asked about. Just struggling to find one that has the antenna able to be added.

Just to say that the Ariel doesn’t plug in to the mifi. The mifi picks up a 4g signal as would a phone, however as it’s inside it may not always be a strong enough signal, the Ariel is a box outside cabled to an indoor receiver so it brings the 4g signal inside and stronger so the mifi can pick it up easier.

I have a Huawei 5570 (I think,) it works very well but requires it to be permanently connected to power. I found this made the battery swell and it wouldn't work without the battery.
So I sourced a Netgear nighthawk M1 second hand and fitted it with a puck antenna.
That too worked well and doesn't need the battery in to work.
However I came over to eu three weeks ago and I couldn't get it to work here.
I reverted to the Huawei and it's been fine.
I can't be bothered finding out why the Netgear doesn't work, but now it's in my mind again I might try whilst still over here.
Trouble is it's all about altering settings and I've no idea what I'm doing 🤔

I don't find connectivity too critical and just use an old phone, permanently plugged in. Won't take an external antenna though.
