Hi again,

Is there a MIFI router/antenna combination that can do two jobs, that of amplifying a local free wifi service, AND have a SIM card slot to receive and amplify a 4/5g signal? I am happy to get a roof mounted jobby.

I think they are usually separate. WiFi and Mifi devices often get described as the same thing but a Wifi device grabs local WiFi over further distance than your phone and a Mifi device has its own sim card.

Example WiFi booster.

Have a look at some of the Teltonika RUT devices in combination with Poynting MIMO antennas. I have the RUTX12 and MIMO-3-17 and although it is almost permanently set to mobile data using the SIM cards in slots 1 & 2, (in that order but with failover enabled), I can search for, and log into, other connections using the device’s WebUI on my phone. As an example I’ve done it with the van sitting on the drive and searched for and found the house high speed fibre connection, then created a new named interface for it, and then reordered the WAN so that it is the first connection to be used.

Any phones, tablets or other devices are then connecting wirelessly as usual to the router via the 2G or 5G, but the data source will be from the new home (or other e.g. campsite) connected interface.

There are also Bluetooth connections to other devices that can be monitored via the RUT such as movement and other sensors which I’m about to investigate.

To echo what Orion said, I have a Teltonika (with Poynting antenna!) and it can be made to work as you describe DDJC.

However, in my experience I've always had better signal from the SIM card than from campsite free WiFi so unless you're out of data or are near a known strong WiFi connection (such as your home one) then it may be of limited use.

I'd also like to advocate a bit of good digital hygiene if connecting to 'free' WiFi as this is not without risk if you don't know and trust the source of the network.
