Yeah, I know they're frowned upon by some but I'm thinking of getting a 700w (input about 1150w) cheap and nasty one for the MH purely for handiness. It won't be used all the time but will be on occasion. Is it really worth paying twice the price for a specific 'Caravan or MH' one? I can't really see much difference (price apart).

Any advice appreciated.

From what I gather if buying a specific one the voltage is raised in the machine.

Standard one you need to but the inverter.

Ah, I should have clarified, I'm only intending using it when on 230/240 hookup not off the 12v side of things. I assume that there's no need for a specific one for this or am I missing something?

Ta!

Any will work OK.
The only thing holding you back will be foreign sites with low power hookups.
A 6a hookup will be no good for a top of the range high powered jobby.
Microwave start up current is far higher than its running input current

we have a cheap tesco own brand small microwave that we inherited when buying a van a few years ago. it lives under a seat when not in use. I have said I will buy a better one when it fails, but it just keeps working

cheap is not always good, but in this case it works

No they'll all work great on ehu ?

Thank you!

Cheers, I won't be going abroad, only travelling UK sites and as I said I'm looking at a cheapo around 700w output/1200w (ish) input.

be mindful if running one on an inverter, the surge current when they switch on and off can be big, so dont be surprised if your inverter shuts down or get annoyed. My inverter is rated at 1500w pure sine, but my 700w microwave has buggered it. it will only put out 800w now before it shuts its self down

I won't be using it via the 12v system, purely on mains.

The van I now have came with a fixed Samsung Junior 240v 600w small but sufficient enough for my needs .
Works well ,also from 1000 inverter.

‘Flat bed’ microwaves don’t have a glass plate to rattle or fall out and break. Asda’s own brand are fairly affordable (we have an older one in the house and the current one in the van - used on EHU only).

(Often on sale for ~£10 less).

As a bonus, the clock doesn't flash or need setting when you first power it up :)

A 700W output microwave requires 1150W input (see OP) so with the normal input current surge your 1500W inverter would be overloaded.

We have a cheap one (Lidl special). It works great when on EHU. It's not used except for when on EHU. We put it in a cupboard (firmly held in place - and we had a power point put in the back of that cupboard for the microwave). When not in use we can still store stuff inside the microwave (teatowels and the like) so no real loss of storage space.

However if I forget and have m/w and electric heating on the safety switch cuts off the electric input to the van. Not an issue, I just have to remember to only have one on at a time :)

Our French MH was fitted with a specialist built-in microwave which ran fine on 12v (no normal oven). Sadly it died last year and we replaced it with a Worten mains only at €50. Fits into the same hole. Have not risked trying it on inverter.

I think this is the kind of specification you need. I have fitted this model in my MH and it runs happily on full power from Spanish campsites with 6A supply.

Broken Link Removed

It has a 20L capacity which is more than enough and a rotating plate.

We have a supermarket cheapy and it works fine for occasional use on mains or inverter. Its 600w and inverter is 1500w 3000w peak.

Afraid I don't know. It came from Tesco and was less than £30. It's sort of built in now so can't weigh it. It's only occasionally used.
