Does anyone know a good stopover place in Alton, Hampshire for one night?

The Three Horseshoes pub has a trip advisor review saying they stopped there in their MH overnight, and I've emailed them, but other than that there doesn;t seem to be a lot coming up on Google, at least not for me.

I want to be as close as possible to the centre as our son is playing in his band there next Friday, but a 45min walk there is fine (we'll be getting a cab back!)

Search for Sites shows a CS just outside the town at Beech.

Lived in Alton for 30 years so where within Alton are you going ?

Three Horsehoes has been attended my MisterB I think, we pass it twice a week and the food has apparently been very good. I always sideways glance and there is space within at all times we have gone past.

If you are just after a night's stop where you can kip then let me know how close you want to be to where

Just to confirm, we stayed at the Three Horsehoes - and am happy to recommend it to anyone looking for a one night park up. the landlords (owners?) also have a camper from memory, so are more than happy to welcome others.
if we were going again, i would look at the menu and times etc and order an evening meal. the food did look really appetising ......

Yeah, just the night. Off to Crystal Palace for the weekend.

My son is playing at the Alton Lounge, so staggering distance from there would be wonderful, but we're not against a walk or even busing in.

Since posting, I've seen a few car parks that seem to allow overnight parking with no express banishment of campers (there's one near Sainsburys). Park4night initially showed me nothing but is now showing a couple of places - I think it likes to mess with my head :)

A quick review of the places I was going to recommend include the town centre car park with overnight parking allowed.

This would be really handy for bands playing in the Market, Swan, Crown, Assembly Rooms etc. Its about 400 yards away from where Sweet Fanny Adams was murdered, Chawton on the outside of Alton has Jane Austen's House, Selborne has Gilbert White's house and if you like beer and travel through Four Marks then pop into the triple F brewery and buy the Moondance (recent beer of the year winner)

Stick away from Sainsburys as they have guards. Just read your update and didnt know where the Lounge was but it works out to be the Community Centre
Lady Place car park is the place for you. 150 m to the Community Centre. (I would also be tempted to stay overnight in the Community Centre car park) but Lady Place will me more Q in the late evening. Overnight parking allowed. Alton will have no enforcement officers overnight anyway and is a Q place for a market town. Try to park near to the left hand exit on the map and probably under the trees is where I would head for.

Beech is a bit of a trek in, on foot, and dependant how far up the hill it is.

It will also depend upon your willingness to park in a car park in UK versus the norm of paying for a CS or CL away from the town.

The Three Horseshoes is not a place to walk into Alton from.

If I were going for a pub stop in Alton, I would give the French Horn a ring, The Queen's Head and even the White Hart at Holybourne. Alton Sports Centre has adequate parking to get away with as well. Anstey Park by the Rugby Club would be Q but you would need to move off in a morning.

We've not stayed anywhere without leccy yet, so this would be a first for us if we do go to a car park. It's good to see choices, and we really should get used to camp site alternatives. Probably opens up a lot more places to go.

I think it is a UK attitude about parking in a car park.
I have obviously been Francophiled in attitude and see nothing wrong with it whatsoever but 10 years ago I would be concerned and worried I would be moved on etc.
But in reality, nobody gives a hoot. As long as you dont park where local yobbos hang out at night you should be good.

You should have a leisure battery that will be fully charged so you will have a different type of electric to work from, so just make sure you have gas for cooking and fridge and you will only be able to charge things from 12 volt unless you have an inverter.
Once you realise you can do it, your motorhome starts to work for you (IMV)

The other thing about parking in a "Unusual to see a motorhome parked here" place is "If you dont like it or there is something wrong about your feeling" then dont do it.

If i were in your shoes, I would go Lady Place, if no likey, Anstey Park by the Rugby Club, If no likey, Sports Centre, if no likey chat to French Horn and Queens Head. If no likey then car park parking may not be for you. We are all different.

Best of luck whatever you decide (I was going to put you on my mums drive but I think you are a bit too big!)

We're 7.5m & over 4T, I'd hate to be responsible for driveway damage but thanks for the thought!

I think we'll be fine with the car park thinggy, it's just when you're new you do think like everyone hates you for being in the car park and a local bobby will tell you to move, just as you finish the bottle of red ...

Adjusted your statement as youre new to this !

I very very much doubt Alton has a dedicated bobby overnight. Response units only and they really really arent interested in motorhomes in a car park.

Should they ask, politely ask them to quote you the byelaw that prohibits it. 99% wont have a clue as to where to find them and they arent interested

You ll be good

Anstey park by the rugby club is quiet. I’ve seen a couple of vans there whilst walking my dogs. Plenty of space and quiet overnight. Its about a twenty minute walk into the town centre. There’s the added bonus of the Acorns coffee van thats open on a Saturday morning.
