We're planning a 3-month trip to Spain, I have just spent an hour on the phone with a travel insurance provider, and so far they haven't given me a price. I Googled healthcare in Spain and it seems that healthcare is free at public doctors and hospitals with the Ghic card. I'm now wondering if we should take the cover from CAMC which excludes pre-existing conditions. We both have medical conditions, but both are stable and haven't required any treatment for years apart from repeat medication.

Does anyone have experience of the Spanish medical system?

Yes last year I had a cyst on my back, had to go to A&E where they cut and drained it and packed it. Had to go to local health centre in Jaca every day for 10 days to have it drained and redressed. Once I got registered using passport and EHIC I just turned up each day, all free and good care.

However I would always take out travel insurance as no matter how you are now you just never know.

It’s great till you need special treatment and repatriation.
Try the Post Office, not joking, we got a good deal but we go for five months, or some banks do travel ins for 90 days.

Just browsed the PO web site and they only offer up to 60 days cover?
edit - just found the single trip cover - that isn't cheap! (for me)

Any medical insurances aren’t cheap especially when you get over 70 and have medication or health conditions to declare.
We have 60 day insurance but I wondered if you did a 60 day trip then went home for a few days or a week, could you then start another 30 day trip in Europe?

4 year old grandson broke an arm in August in Tenerife nearest hospital was private. €420 for x ray and plaster, £220 for certificate to fly.

Total travel protection

I have gone through many questions and spent about an hour and a half on the phone with a big insurance broker regarding medical insurance. Finished up with a quote of just over £1,340.
I have taken cover with CAMC's Red Pennant full cover including breakdown, medical and repatriation including for our dogs, just under £400. The medical questions were very simple and ended up with one minor unresolved condition being excluded. I'm not sure why the price is so different, but as Spanish public hospitals are free with the Ghic card, I am happy to go with it. I hope I never have to find out how good/ bad it is.
