Planning to buy.
  • The 2024 model has a 9-speed transmission and the 2025 model will have a new 8-speed transmission. Should I wait for the new 8-speed transmission? Is the 9-speed transmission really that bad?
  • The dealer wants to install a Dometic FJ2200 Air Conditioner, are they quality?
  • For an off-grid set-up, are 400 w panels on the roof enough for a family of 3?
  • Should I get rear air suspension to level the camper when needed?
  • Is going with a Ford based motorhome a mistake? Should I pay more for a Fiat based motorhome?

Whether it's ford or fiat is a minor thing. I'd get the cheapest. I have had both. Both have always been ok. I prefer the fiat but only just. Had less trust in the ford after cars with the same engine were a disaster, but it was ok. Ford is nice to drive and the engine is very smooth.

The Transit is a nicer cockpit and drives slightly more like a car whereas the Fiat is definitely a van. If you get the Ford then make sure you get deadlocks fitted and go to Vanbitz to get the alarm and tracker/immobiliser fitted (see other threads on Vanbitz ). Transits are notorious for being easy to steal.
Fitting Aircon will eat into your payload, do you actually need it ? Will you be going south into Sunny Europe? If not ask them why they want to fit it. It will very quickly drain your batteries if off grid.
400w is a reasonable amount of solar but it really depends on how much off grid living you will do, where ( Scotland not much sun 😈 Spain plenty ),what size of invertor is fitted and whether you will have gas installed or not.
Air suspension is a good idea but again but it will use some of your payload. If you have a C1 licence you could ask the dealer to increase weight to give you more payload.

Are the new Ford Engines still a disaster?

Which locks do you recommend? I found some nice ones that mount on the inside forcing you to exit from the back.

I cant recommend any but I think additional deadlocks to the cab doors can be fitted by most locksmiths or diy if your handy (I am not 🤪)
