We are currently in Belgium and will be heading through Luxemburg tomorrow with the eventual aim of reaching Slovenia via Munich. We are looking for overnight stops (longer if it's interrsting) along this route. Tomorrow hoping to find somewhere between Saarbrucken and Karlsruhe. Presumably lots have done this route to southern Germany/Austria/Slovenia. Probably travelling about 150 miles a day. Any recommendations?

We have stayed at Pforzheim (just off A8) between Karlsruhe and Stuttgart. Free basic Stellplatz, but does the job. It’s on camper contact etc

2 really good museums to visit

and

The Speyer one has a stellplatze by the hotel about 500mtrs from entrance
The Sinsheim one has a stellplatze with facilities at Schwimbad about 2k walk away from Museum .
This is about halfway between Lux and Munich @stevec

We use Saarlouis every time we come back from the UK.

I agree about the technical museums at Speyer and Sinsheim, they are both well worth a visit. Allow at least half a day, minimum.
At Sinsheim it is possible to stay overnight on the museum car park for free, several motor homes do, but we just parked for the visit and then stayed on the Stellplatz 2 km away.

If you don't mind a short detour, I thoroughly recommend getting off the A8 after Zweibrucken and taking the L700 / D35 for 33 km to Bitche in the "Parc Naturel Régional des Vosges du Nord". There is a very nice, free Stellplatz right next to Bitchie fortress which you can visit for €10 including audio/visual tour.

Another tip, if you are taking the A8 from Karlsruhe to Munich, is to take the A8 / A7 interchange and drive 22 km to the free Stellplatz close to the very interesting underground caves at Charlottenhöhle (with guided tours). See https://www.wikiwand.com/de/Charlottenhöhle.
