Can I buy any campingaz powered bbq and plug it into my van Gaslow supply for use outside under my awning?

This will depend on the regulator / burner on the BBQ.

I have a LP (Low pressure) burner on my Cadac. That I understand could enable it to connect direct to an output off an underslung LPG using a bullfinch type connector and hose. But for convenience I run it from little disposable C500 type cannisters which are "High Pressure" , with the cannister connected to it's own little regulator then into the Cadac via hose.

Check out the data plate on any intended purchase to see if it matches your van supply - 30mb if of recent manufacture. Many portable propane BBQs are designed to run on 37mb as it’s assumed they’ll be supplied by a standalone cylinder with regulator. Will it make a difference to performance? Possibly not noticeable in the heat of summer but at other times it’s likely to make a difference as some have reported.

Have my little Weber Q1000 that I have converted to plug into the vans gas BBQ point😁
Brilliant little BBQ and when the lid is down you can cook and roast on it.

I keep trying with the Cadac, I just find it a pain in the backside to clean.

The non stick isn’t and it always seems easier to just use the van as well as having more payload because I leave the useless bit of junk at home most of the time. 😂

I must be missing out as people always seem to be using the bloody things.

With my Weber I only clean it once a year, that is a full strip down and the grills put in a bag with oven cleaner it then comes up like new.

All other times I just wind it up full throttle after cooking and then give it a go over with the wire brush then wipe down with kitchen towel.
The next time I use it I run it full throttle again for a bit before cooking.

We had a cada c safari chef and found just the same so got rid. We now either use a charcoal BBQ with a fan incorporated or a cheap £10 single gas ring and non stick pan which in effect is what most cadacs are .

Our current outdoor cooking battery:

Napoleon TravelQ 285 and scissor cart. NJ-100 stainless single burner/dual heat hob, and where permitted, charcoal Cobb.

Also got a Weber Q1000 and a double burner on a Y shaped gas hose connection to the van's gas supply. It sits on the Kampa Colonel Field Kitchen.
I do all the cooking outside, unless it is a howling gale.

Incidentally, the difference between the Q1000 and the Q1200 is seventy five quid, a stand and a thermometer. I didn't want a stand, so bought a ten quid thermometer, drilled a hole and saved sixty quid.
You can't see it here, but I also have a griddle plate for the Weber. Swap one of the grills for the plate and you can do your morning eggs.

The most important thing is whether the burner or BBQ is high or low pressure. Broadly, without adapters, high pressure kit uses a gas bottle, while low pressure kit can be connected to the motorhome on-board gas.

The burner above is the flimsy Campingaz double stove. It was extremely difficult to keep clean and it is now in the bin. I now use the Hi Gear double burner with grill. Tougher, integrated windshields, easier to keep clean and a decent grill.

I have wasted thousands of pounds over the years buying BBQ’s and grills.

If I was given a Cadac I’d refuse it, OK for frying or making Paella, excellent for turning decent steak grey and chewy as it slowly, so slowly cooks it.

For years in the camper I used a stainless steel

Magma, it worked OK till I dropped it!

Then I bought a Dometic grill/oven/rotisserie but it’s a faff to put together

Currently we are travelling a lot more in the camper, so for overnight stops I have a Tefal induction hob which brings a cast iron griddle to smoking in a flash perfect for steaks, skewers and chops, all easily wiped down, unplugged and put away afterward and a Webber Q1200 that comes out when we plan staying more than a couple of nights.

As we are independent of hook up, the ability to use the induction hob and air fryer rather than gas makes us even more energy independent.

I have also gone through the same product chasing at home, and again, have ended up biting the bullet and buying Webber gas and Webber charcoal BBQ’s

I know some people are happy with their Cadac’s great, I know people who think that their ‘normal’ wanting their steaks ‘well done’ 😏

I was in a restaurant the other night in Port Grimaud, and the waiter who’d switched to English to describe the ‘specials’ due to our faltering French (we assumed) I ordered a steak and was asked ’how do you want it, Chef will do blue, rare, medium, or tell you to fu*k off somewhere else’

It was said with a smile, I’m happy with blu or rare so we didn’t need to test the statement lol

Yes, the French won’t ruin steak like the local Wetherspoons. 😂

It’s like joining the Motor Caravan Club, you do it once
I have to admit I've never had a cadac, looked at them and thought it all too unnecessary for what I want. OK if that's what some like. Most of my other club members tend to follow campsite trends/fads and bought these but after a few years stopped using them. Some stiil do though.

You’ve said what you won’t/don’t use, why not also include details of what you will/do use to help others at bbq purchase/replacement time?

We bought our Cadac many years ago initially as a stop gap option, when Millets online were offloading them at massively discounted prices compared to other vendors. It just keeps on going, but I’ve no clue what travel bbq we’ll go for upon its inevitable demise.

Have a small cadac low pressure working off a cannister and regulator. Have cooked many a fine medium rare steak on it. I think a cook off on some site some time with many beers might be a good idea!

I find even their medium done wants to get up and run off down the road😁😁
We had some nice steaks last December in France and mine was very rare considering I asked for medium, luckily there was no blood otherwise I would have sent it back😬😬

Yes, we use the small Cadac and it's plenty big enough for 2 people and stores away nicely in a bag.

We used a typical charcoal camping barbeque for years but when the kids left it was really too big for the two of us but we used it in our club meets as the communal cooking was such a pleasure. The club has shrunk over the years and communal BBQing is just about over.

We find cleaning the BBQ too much bother now and tend to put all our BBQ meats and veg in the oven. 30minutes later its done to a tee without all the bother. When abroad and it's hotter we now would use disposable BBQs - Just big enough for us two and no bother.

How do you take a steak to 'medium' and then bring it back to 'rare'?

Good idea re cook off, you cannot get the searing heat on a bit of coated aluminium

Simple physics 👌

The only reason we cook outdoors is, when necessary, to keep the heat down inside the van. Otherwise we use the hob. We have the small Cadac. As far as I can see most gas "BBQs" are gas hotplates. And better for it.
