While disconnecting the main battery to try and solve the flashing odometer (it didn't work) I noticed there is an earth lead that is not connected to anything. It's a Citroen Jumper base van, anyone have any clues to what it might be? Should I connect it to the negative terminal?

I was going to say, well it can't do any harm, but on reflection, ignore that advice and wait for someone who actually knows
That is why I am asking, I thought it's only an earth lead what damage can it do? But everything has changed so much on vehicles since I was working on them I didn't want to risk it 😀

I have one on my van in the same place. When I asked on here, I was told that some wires are not used when they're converted. I assumed it was one of those. Yours like mine doesn't look as if its ever been connected to anything.

Yes, but it seems to be in the same loom as the rest of the earth leads, no?

Vehicle manufacturer these days normally fit a loom that cover all specifications in a vehicle range with some circuit not being used depending on the model, so there a normally a few cables, many with connectors on the end floating about in various locations about a vehicle, I have several in my engine bay as well as the one you have on top of your battery.

Yes, that's true. I just thought I would throw it out there in this knowledgeable community and see if there was a better answer than what I had assumed. Seems not, so I'll not worry about it. Thanks everyone for your input.

As the crimp lug is completely un-insulated i would expect it being an earth.
If its been accidently not connected the fitter needs a new guide dog.... Its not something you could miss.
Just tuck it out of the way.

That's part of the wiring harness for vehicles that have the battery isolator relay fitted , there's also a vacant multiplug with that ground lead, it's not connected at the other end. All models have the same wiring harness regardless of whether the option is fitted or not . Your flashing odometer is due to a node not communicating on the CANbus, probably radio , airbag ecu or similar . You need to get a proxi alignment carried out to re sync the node.
