Looking for a suitable jack for a 3.5T Ducato

I mentioned earlier about the lack of clearance to get a jack in on my back axel..
And i remember making a note of it to try and sort a suitable jack..
Never did find a jack that would do the job on its own ....ie fit under the axel and give sufficient lift to change the wheel in one lift..

just drive onto a leveling ramp

Personally I wouldn't work under a van/motorhome or come to think of any vehicle with just a jack, ok for a quick wheel change but nothing else.

its a very small area to be balancing your MH on?
Yes agreed, that was my thought, but I am only looking at this jack for wheel change in an emergency, ond ONLY if safe, thank you. 😊

I like to be prepared. I carry a 10 tonne bottle jack , a 2 tonne trolley jack , a pair of 3 tonne axle stands ,wheel chocks, a 24" breaker bar , full socket set , spanners, pliers torque wrench etc.

And as such im pretty confident i can do most roadside repairs quicker than it takes to send out a recovery driver.
Replaced, discs, pads , shoes etc last year roadsides in france and portugal 😁

Would never trust a motorhome on the flimsy jack supplied for the chassis cab on its own.

Used the Fiat jack on my 4500kg van a few time without any problems. Can't get my 2t trolly jack to lift it at all.
2 tonne trolley jack will struggle to lift on its own ....i only use mine as a back up. I use the bottle jack to do the main lifting ...much stronger.

We did the same Lenny when I needed to grease the axle, lifted it quite easily and felt safe as it was locked in the chassis.

It balances on the other 3 or more wheels.
yeah but they have a larger area on the ground and are physically attached to the van, the jack could slip out if any movement of the van

Not if you know what you are doing..
OK its up to you, I know what I am doing but would not trust that to hold the van and be underneath!! I used the Fiat jack which was easy to use and then axle stands but obviously do not carry stands around all the time.

Couple of years ago in Morocco when I had a puncture on a campsite, the guy who came out to me refused the hydraulic bottle jack and asked for the Fiat one! Which worked quite happily however.

Still going to carry both though.

It's never safe to work under any vehicle just using a Jack no matter how good it is but to change a wheel you don't go under..Old wheel off and shove it under the van just in case.BUSBY.

Didn’t these show up as needing replacing on the last service
Think in the time periods for servicing on modern vans you could easily wear a set of pads out.I still have my older van serviced fully every 6 to 8 k..BUSBY.😁

You don't have to lift it..BUSBY😁

So what you are saying is that you just roll the wheel up to the hub and screw holes and hope they line up.
Invariably they won't. So you roll it away again, adjust the jack and have another guess as where they are going to line up.
OK but now the wheel bolts holes are not in line so I now need to revolve the wheel --- a bit - Now what?

Do I need to lift it up?

Am I doing it wrong?

I did 18000miles on my trip last year 😉 discs were replaced due to warping in the piranese.....

I recently used the supplied jack on my 4.5t Fiat MH to grease the ALKO chassis and must admit was impressed. Easy to use and quick to get wheels off ground and back, used axle stand whilst under just in case...
I think the Fiat jacks are a lot better now and do the job they are supposed to do.

Mine came with no jack or spare wheel..
But i prefere to carry them..
I carry a small two ton trolley jack..its the only thing I could find that was suitable to fit under the rear axel..and even then after getting a puncture recently I found that when the tyre is flat even the trolley jack won't fit under the axel the clearance is that poor..
Was lucky that I could get a bit air in the tyre and then slip the jack in..
The two ton jack feels like its on its limit as well so I'm still looking for something suitable..maybe an air bag off the exhaust..
Keep meaning to look into that..
I think it pays to remember that when jacking something like a motorhome it pays to have chocks and blocks as well..
Can understand folk wanting to leave it to the breakdown people...but you can be waiting a long time on them ..
Andy.
Drive the punctured wheel up a levelling ramp,,You hardly have to Jack it up much then and your Jack will go under the axle BUSBY.

Two tyre levers,,one under each bottom side of the tyre and you just lever the tyre until it lines up,,That's how we changed truck wheels and they weigh a couple of cwt... BUSBY.

Where do I get the tyre levers from?
Now I have to carry a two tonne hydraulic jack, a monster, breaker bar and two big tyres levers?
I wouldn't be happy lifting any of em.

Sorry your still not very helpful :Eeek: :Eeek:

Jeeez, you make changing a wheel seem like a major overhaul..

Halfords,,If I showed you in person you would see how simple it is. It's all about technique not brute force..Short piece of tubing can be used on your wheel brace to brake the nuts and in place of a tyre lever for rotating and lifting wheel on to hub. I am 75,,full of RA and the hardest part is kneeling down to do it.BUSBY.
