Hi all, I am starting a new job soon and as I cant move the family yet, I am contemplating using the motorhome (when its fixed...) At the minute web searches are throwing up a few campsites in the area but none are interested in me being there long term. I'm at the point where its looking just as cheap to book a Travelodge Monday to Friday.

I was thinking using the van and leaving it on site over the weekends but it seems that most places clearly hate me!!!!

If anyone has any advice on decent/cheap locations within 20 miles of Longtown, let me know.

Many thanks in advance

Paul

There is a little site at Gretna green we have stayed at many times, it’s on the left as you enter from Carslile.

The one at the Annan end of Gretna is open all year. I am sure that it is all hardstanding with full facilities. Cannot remember the name of it just now though.

Its a pity that you are needing a site just now as there is a site just along the road between Longtown and the MOD site, but i don't think it is open all year.

I'm going to work at the MoD site so that one is perfect but when I spoke to the owner he wasn't keen on someone staying there long term. Ideally I would leave van there at weekend too (even if its off a pitch) as it faster to drive home in the car!

Bruce's Cave campsite about 8 miles from Longtown.

Sorry can't help with your specific request but interested where you going to be working..
Used to go there a lot in the 70/80's
Massive place, Thought it was as good as mothballed/closed/derelict. I had heard that there was going to be major investment and revamping of MOD Longtown..
Interesting...

They've just built three enormous sheds on the CAD site, local rumours suggest it might but he something to do with decommissioning subs ?
Have you tried https://the-braids.uk/ in Gretna ?
The High Gaitle site (circled) would have been perfect for you.

Edit, only my opinion, but Gretna and Longtown I find are quite miserable little places (I lived in Gretna for a few years and my son lives just outside Longtown) another thing to consider, a Gretna address gives you free prescriptions but higher income tax and lower drink drive limits and in my younger days, Longtown was known locally as "Dodge City" !

If you are using a hotel the days inn just off the M6 is ok . Used it in November make sure you get a refurbished room.

Hi.
Not to mention in the old days the " Rose Bank transport cafe and lodging house, clean and tidy with good grub and a pub nearby. ( Used by some rough boys on occasions...... .... .......) " Only Longtown called Dodge City ? " Happy days.

That's where I saw truckers light a fire under a wagon on a frosty morning for the first time and also pulling on a rope tied to the starting handle ! I think the folks who ran the place were called Peacock ?
The pub was likely the Crossways Inn, still on the go, but catering more for wedding parties these days ?
Did you get in the Moss Cafe just down the road heading south on the 74, all flattened and a BP service station and Travelodge now, I'm sure the ghost of Tulip still wanders round the place though !

Hi
Moss Cafe ? .. Was it the last one before the border on the left coming down ? If so Yes., we called it " The Ranch " Was there one night when it was blowing a gale, coming into the cab from all angles and there's me smiling away, rugged up in my sleeping bag..... Because......... Jennifer and her mate had gone to Paris for a few nights and were on the very windy Dover Calais ferry crossing that night ;)........................ Nuff said.. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:(y)
Tea Bag.
PS. Lighting fires underneath to unfreeze fuel pipes brakes etc. soon stopped, when they started to use plastic pipework... Three man job to start an old cold Gardner engine. 1. In the cab on the starter button. Second. With a bit of Burning rag down the air filter. Third. ( With thumb in the correct position ) on the starter handle. WHEN it started,it would black out the area for a couple of minutes, then build the air up and you escaped.

Hi
It might be worth trying low Moor head farm in Longtown.
We have stopped there a number of times. Although it is a CL they do storage and also on a couple of occasions we have pitched up in the yard when the site was full. It has electric hook up's.
