Location of fuse board/block. Hymer S520

Hi, we have a hymer S520 1996.

The electrics are quite bad we have found a really hot cable from the TV anteena/satellite so we have removed these.

However, we have not found the fuseboard/block. Does anyone know the best place to find these please?

I presume you are talking about the 12V fuseboard. In Hymers that is usually a big blue box called a Schaudt Electroblock (EBL). I'm not sure a 1996 Hymer will have one, but I think it's likely. It could be well hidden. Mine (2006 Hymer) is in some small cupboards with a sliding top, next to the driver's seat. There is a false bottom on one of the compartments, which reveals the EBL when removed.

The EBL usually contains the mains charger, the 12V fuses, and some relays for switching the fridge and charging the leisure battery from the alternator while the engine is running.

Try looking in all the cupboards and lockers. The wardrobe may have a removable panel. Under the driver's seat or passenger seat is a favourite place.

Usually the 240V mains unit, with the breaker switches, is separate, somewhere near the mains inlet socket.

Thanks for your reply. We have just found the ebl. It's under the drivers seat so we're just going to try and trace the hot cable back to the source and remove it.

We know it's for the TV/ satellite which we won't use so it will be fine for us to remove it.

Haven't got a wiring diagram so we'll follow the cable through

Which EBL model number is it? Wiring diagrams are available on the Lippert Europe website (Schaudt are now part of Lippert). That's for the EBL connections and internal wiring, not the motorhome habitation wiring, but still very useful.
 
One other concern with a 1996 motorhome is the mains supply box. Motorhomes nowadays have two different types of breaker switch. An RCD, which has a 'Test' button, protects against electric shock, but not against overcurrent faults. An MCB, with no test button, protects against overcurrent faults but not electric shock.

It's quite likely that your mains 'consumer unit' only has an MCB. You should get an RCD fitted as soon as you can. It's usually quick, easy and not expensive. If, as you say, the electrics are a bit dodgy, it could save your life.

If you're not sure, post a pic of your mains breaker switches, someone will be able to tell you if it's OK or not.

Thanks for telling us about this. Always beat to be safe for sure.

I will take a photo this morning and upload it to see if it's a rcd or mcb.

We removed the bad cable and all seems fine now.
