Hello,

I have two 110ah batteries in the van, traditional lead acid. Which get charged from mains or the VSR when driving. However I don't think they are really up to the high demands I put on them, TV, Diesel heater, fridge, lights, fan. Also to be honest I did not buy a good brand just whatever from amazon.

So I am thinking of getting a fancy ass Lithium battery from fogstar 230ah / 280ah. My question is can I hook it up to use a VSR like the one in the link... will it work pretty much like the old one and can I just slot the cyrix box in place of the old VSR and add in the two other cables they require. Or is it more complicated than that. I will also buy a mains charger from fogstar for the battery.

Thanks for any help.

No, that will simply put the engine and leisure battery (s) in parallel

You will need what is known as a B2B (Battery To Battery) Charger

In essence an B2B is intelligent and will control the charge to suit the [parameter's it's set/designed for so will not allow the Lithium battery (AKA a charge sponge) to discharge the engine battery or damage the alternator with its demands

The Voltage Sensing Relay is just a switch so dumb to all intents and purposes

Thank you very much Eddie.

If you have a normal alternator, and good cables, you could get away with a cyrix, but not that one, there is a model for lithium, that you can program certain parameters.
Better choice is a b2b hands down.

Just read up on the B2B / DC - DC chargers makes sense very clear. Thanks again.

I have a final question if anyone is still looking :)

Am I able to hook the van up to mains turn on the charger and then also run the 12v appliances while it is charging and when it is fully charged is there a 'passthrough' mode which would allow this to happen... for example 30a charger 10amp draw so 20amps might go to the battery. Obviously this is in very simple terms so I hope this makes sense.

Once your batteries are full, the power from the charger goes to the loads, the charger will continue to put a charge to hold a set voltage. It will not know if that power goes to the batteries or the load, so yes, it will feed the loads like a power supply.

Absolutely ideal thank you very much. So no problems when using a hookup to both charge the battery and draw a little from it, and say it's a 30a charger and if somehow my draw on the battery is 35a then the battery will just drain by the 5a.

Yes

Some systems, will isolate the battery and provide a charge and provide the necessary 12 volt on demand, but to be fair this is with the bigger chargers that will deliver 80 -100 amps

Lots of different types, but which ever you have yes

Excellent I am buying all fogstar stuff so it will be assured to be well setup for the battery.

Thanks everyone for all your help.

You shouldn’t need hook up with a lithium battery bank. Eco-worthy advertising 100amp lithium for £279.99

Thanks stevewagner however if I am away for a few days I would still need to stop off at a campsite and use the facilities to charge backup, drop the kids off at the pool, and take a decent shower. Although I have purchased a much larger battery than the one you have seen I would still need to replenish it if I were to go away for a few days.
