Dethleffs Trend 7057
Good morning,
Has anybody out there converted a LHD to a RHD ? We have a Dethleffs c class on Fiat Ducato 2018 and was wondering if it would be financially viable?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Regards

I'm not sure about the Ducato, but many vehicles have the drive side built into the underlying structure. It's mainly the firewall bulkhead that's sided because where the steering column goes through and the holes for air.

Even if you get around the structure, you've still got a hell of a lot of parts that are drive specific. Like the cab side of the cooling and AC loops are rearranged. The steering rack is different.

It would probably be easier to switch the body on to the back of a donor vehicle.

I did convert a car from LHD to RHD in the early 70's it was more complicated than I had expected and I had to extend every wire in the loom. So much is different even the pedals. I expect these days with all the extra kit a modern vehicle has it would be almost impossible

You'd probably also devalue the vehicle.

The most economical thing to do without be to sell and rebuy. Even with the hit you'll take at the dealer.

Personally I think it'd be fine with LHD. UK junction layouts are mostly a high enough standard that LHD isn't an issue. And LHD is useful in Europe.

A non starter ..

and given the choice I would always have a LHD .. even for use in the UK ..
Totally agree, still peed off if the new van if it ever arrives it will be RHD as I would have had to wait over another year for a LHD.

There are railway arch companies in Poland that specialise in converting higher end cars from RHD to LHD.

They buy a second hand BMW in the UK, drive to Poland and convert to LHD and then sell on the German or Russian 2nd hand market and make enough to warrant the conversion and importation costs. It's about 3 days work to do the job if you have all the parts and have done it several times before.

If you can find the 'railway arch converters' it might be worth asking the cost of converting a van the other way, you would need to drive to Poland to get it done.

Frankly I suspect the time and effort is not worth the cost.
There are many out there who will pay extra for a LHD motorhome, so if it's not right for you, sell it and get what you actually want, a lot lest cost and hassle in the long term.

If you really want a RHD (and I can’t think why) I’d sell the LHD and buy RHD. The market for LHD is extremely good at the moment, took me about 2 weeks to sell my LHD Challenger Vany (PVC) and I had a lot of interest. Like Lenny, I am very sorry to have to switch to RHD. Have always had LHD including 2 in UK.

Saw a Polish truck loaded with RHD write offs yesterday on the A2 in Germany heading east. Used to see loads of them after wall came down, not so many these days.

I Once test drove some Porsche 911's a while back (mid life Crisis).

I test drove three older models, and the fourth one was the only newer model in my Budget. It was a small Independent dealer, he said to me "So ! What do you think?"

I said, well, it does not feel very well screwed together and when cornering, its like the whole cab is twisting, not the chassis, the cab.

"Are you interested in buying it?"

Absolutely not. Prefer my BMW M3.

Well he said, I just so you know. The car used to be a LHD and has Been converted to RHD. Thats probably why!

A local Polish mechanic here in Stockport converted a Mitsubishi Shogun from Manual to Automatic for a Customer. Was an older model so probably easier than the new ones of today.

Still going strong and in use daily.

I have started to use a Polish Mechanic in Spain. They just seem to have more Knowledge and Passion for cars and engineering.

It is most definately possible...and equally non-viable due to the cost. Just holiday more in the EU.

Can't really compare we don't have mechanics any more just panel jockeys.

If I had been offered a choice I would have ordered LHD from new. So much easier to drive abroad.

UK MH dealers also seemed biased against LHD trade-ins. A very insular mindset. Finding a private buyer for my LHD was fairly easy and I got top dollar.

Hello again
I didn’t realise LHD moho’s are so sought after!
Thank you all for putting my mind at rest.
I’ll be selling this when we return from Spain in March

To be fair to our new van supplier did offer us a very good trade in offer for our LHD. But we got a bit more privately. I was however contacted be some dealers who told me how difficult it was to sell LHD in UK etc. just talking rubbish!
