DGT have issued a much needed clarification of the law regarding parking and sleeping in motorhome among other things, which also clarifies, in Section 8, the situation regarding cars being towed which are not on trailers - ie "Toads".

The document is online - search "PROT 3023/14" or, hopefully, attached to this post, I have pasted section 8 below as well:

Google translate:
In relation to the queries made to the DGT about the possibility of a motorhome towing a car, this possibility is not allowed in the General Vehicle Regulations, since it only contemplates that a towing vehicle can tow a trailer or semi-trailer (articles 13 and 26). Likewise, only the "Assistance Operators on public roads" may carry out the action of towing or dragging damaged vehicles on public roads or immobilized for any other reason, as determined by Royal Decree 159/2021, of March 16, by which Aid services on public roads are regulated. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the circulation of a group of vehicles made up of a motorhome and a trailer or semi-trailer on which another vehicle is transported, is allowed if the group meets the conditions for circulation on public roads, meets the technical requirements provided for in Regulation (EU) 2018/858 and CEPE/ONU Regulations 55 or 102 on mechanical coupling devices and also does not exceed the maximum authorized length for these assemblies, which is 18.75 meters for trailers and 16.50 meters for the semi-trailers.

The clarification is helpful but not a surprise. This is pretty much my understanding based on previous discussions.

This is like a deja vu thread .😩👎😁

There's no need to be snarky.

I realise fully the toad topic has been done to death before - hence my closing comment re popcorn.

The reason for posting it is that here in Spain it is (very) rare to get a distillation of all the various points of law regarding a subject in one place. This document does that - it clarifies the much discussed differentiation between camping and parking, clarifies the carrying of motorcycles, scooters and push bikes, speed limits etc, etc all specifically for motorhomes - and all in one document you can show if challenged and which bears a digital signature of authenticity. And is a document whose existence, I suspect, most of the UK subscribers to the forum were unaware of.

I speed read it and thought they were allowing Toads as long as the rig was a under a certain length, I'll read it again :D
no they are allowing vehicles to be transported on trailers provided that said trailers comply with the length & weight limits.

Assuming Google translate is giving us the correct information

I was with you Jim, on first reading and couldn't quite understand, because the two statements appeared to contradict each other.

But, yes reading more carefully I understand and it is simply confirming what most have known for a long time. If you want to tow a car behind your van, it needs to be on a trailer (that meets the regs). And toads, as we know them, are strictly not allowed.

What's a semi-trailer?

What's a semi-trailer?
I was thinking the exact same thing Minxy

As could this refer to something that has an approved towing and braking system which a TOAD would have.

What's a semi-trailer?
A "domestic" semi trailer normally has just one axle - but could a bigger or more commercial one could have two or more at the rear. It's weight is, party, borne by the tow ball / fifth wheel. When unhitched it'll need either a jockey wheel or legs dropped to keep it level.
A "full" trailer will have more than one axle but they will be further apart and it'll stand up on it's own when uncoupled. It'll be coupled onto the tow vehicle with a draw bar.
Opening pop corn...

Hot News, fined in Spain this afternoon….
Just east of A Coruna in northern Spain with our Moho and tow car (on A frame).
Have driven through France and across the Spanish coast. Passed (by) many Police cars no problem.
Just stopped by Trafico who says infringement with rolling car €100 fine.
Not me, another forum member!

That’s exactly the response I got on one FB group when I was kicked out of of a group for mentioning similar, followed by the admin blocking me! 🙄

If that third party story proves it’s illegal, I’ll top trump it by saying I drove my motorhome for hundreds of miles in Spain with my A Framed car and no one said anything.

For what it's worth and quite a few years ago, I got asked to A bar my mates Vw Polo, on the Plym Roscoff ferry heading for his finka at L'Ampolla Sp.

Got away with it all the way as far as Lleida (almost there🙄)

Got stopped by traffic plod, on the outskirts first it was going to be €180 on the spot fine.
Spun him a yarn he had just broken down and had came up to tow him home, showed him it was my Ex AA, Aframe agued it down to €40 as I didn't have the override brake cable connected.
Mate Gil paid the fine.
Happy days
