Keeping the right to drive a motorhome at 70

I wondered if other motorhomers have experienced getting their licence at 70 and keeping the right to drive their motorhome (4 ton) and also a trailer on their car (nothing to do with the motorhome)? This is my first photo licence and it was unbelievably complex. The form you need is a D2 which is for 'Application for lorry, bus or minibus driving licence'. It requires a medical examination, which I gather is yearly at approx £110 each year. The bit that is confusing is driving a bus or lorry for profit (commercially) is totally different from driving your own motorhome for personal leisure, yet the form has nowhere to clarify the difference! The photo requirements are much the same as your passport photo requirements, but state 'no frames' but does that also mean frameless glasses? I am convinced they want us to relinquish these rights at 70 and just only drive a car. Any thoughts?
 
I'm sure there is a box to tick that just says C1 no mention of lorries or buses,Specsavers for eye test as they are DVLA spproved,licence will last for three years. Here you go 🙂

You will automatically get your BE on your licence which enables you to tow a caravan or trailer.

Welcome to the World of obfuscation, confusion and downright delay in being able to continue driving your >3.5t vehicle.

While you are waiting for your 'New' licence (assuming they accept what the medically qualified person writes and not decide
to put you through the mill of stress tests,) you can at least continue driving your leisure vehicle IN THIS COUNTRY ONLY!!!
under the protection of Section 88 of the Road Traffic Act.

However, such protection does not stretch to going abroad, so that , every three years, you may be adding frustration to your
ability to go abroad with the motorhome.,

It’s easy just go to post office they have the forms you need then as said D4drivers drivers they will do medical fill there part of form then send off and wait

If you have anything medically wrong with you or have any sort of disability, you will be put through the mill regardless of whether they are Specsavers D4drivers or any other private organisations.

Don't ask me how I know.......I just know.🙄

For most it is once every 3 years but if you have medical problems they might insist on annually.
The form you need is a D2 which is for 'Application for lorry, bus or minibus driving licence
The C1 license covers lighter HGV vehicles which is what you need for a motorhome of over 3500kg because it is classed as PHGV (Private HGV). Unfortunately they do not make a distinction between driving a PHGV for leisure and the commercial driving of HGV vehicles.

Yesterday I had a stress test so I can keep my C1 after a heart attack. The Heart Consultant said the test was probably tougher than it needed to be for motorhome driving because the license also covers the long hours and heavy deliveries encountered by professional HGV drivers. I think many of us would welcome a different license for PHGV instead of the HGV one but I don’t see any signs of this changing. We are basically stuck with either jumping through the medical hoops or driving a motorhome of less than 3500kg. For now I get to keep my C1 but whether I will be able to keep it in the years ahead is another matter.

Self & wife just renewed our C1's at 73, it was a doddle, medical at D4Drivers £55 posted forms to DVLA new licences back in 10 days.

I suspect that if they accept your doctors report you will be ok but if not you will have to go to a consultant.
As with all things governmental everything is Black or White, Pass or Fail.

The DVLA expect you to get through the whole test. I managed it but I was ready to stop at the end of the 9 minutes (age 72) but in the last 7 months I have had a knee replacement, a heart attack and a nasty liver infection that also put me in hospital. I am not back at my peak of fitness.

The Consultant and nurse monitor your heart and blood pressure throughout the test and would stop it early if there were danger signs. However the Consultant said that many older participants pull out before the end because they find it too stressful. The test is used for medical purposes and assessment not just by the DVLA for driver fitness.

Your normal driving licence you can ask them to use your passport photo if its still in date and likeness.
