Hi,
Thanks for letting me join this forum. I will be purchasing a motor home early next year and so looking forward to it. Looking at 4 berth compact vans (with drop down bed) as < 6m in length, easier to tow and park etc. Any hints and tips, please send my way!

Layout!... is the No. 1 criteria for choosing a motorhome. Please go to any dealers/exhibitions and check out the choices first. You will know the best layout for you when you see it....It's a 6th sense thing.

Welcome, please give the forum a bit more info on your intended van.
Price range, new or how old is too old. Are you happy with left hand drive? You describe your requirement as a compact van. Vans are normaly defined as:-

1. Camper Van, think small Volkswagen hippy van.
2. Panel Van Conversion ( PVC), a larger Transit sized delivery van fitted with windows and a caravan interior.
3. C Class, a delivery van front end with a caravan style body.
4. A Class, a delivery van style chassis with a complete caravan style body including cab and windscreen.
5. Recreational Vehicle (RV), giant american style van, often based on a bus or lorry chassis.

Can you think of anything you definitely want or do not want.

We have a 6.3m Ducato, the extra 30cm makes little difference outside when driving but a big difference inside when trying to live in it. For 4 berth you would appreciate any extra space.
If you are under 40 ish, you need to be careful of weight with your driving licence, even our PVC is right on the limit of 3500kg - thats with 2 adults only so no children or their toys!
There is a guide in resources on how to buy a Motorhome.

Hi and welcome, you've started of the right way by joining and asking questions first. It might help if you let us know your budget too.

Welcome. As others have said, if you are interested in a small 4 berth van, pay attention to the weight and usable payload. If you are intending to buy a smallish van, I'd personally recommend an underslung gas tank as that will give you more internal storage space.
We have a 6m PVC and an internal gas locker would really eat into our storage.

Welcome OldBlue , lots of things to consider before spending your money .
Good luck in your search . (y)
Like most things in life it comes dont to how much you wanna speed, then from there you can assess the options available.

Thanks, have a good idea of layout, but going to motorhome / caravan show on 15th Jan to look at setups, to be sure.

Just a little more info.
Cost of around £50K. Will need it to travel around on my cycling trips with cycling buddies and holidays/weekends with my wife. Kids grown up, but need extra berth just in case they wish to come along. So belted seats needs to be 4. Had a caravan for last 15 years, been self sufficient, like quite/small sites, so same needed with Motor home.
Like the idea of motor home < 6 meters. Better to park, drive, as have desire to travel through France next year for example. Like the idea of 'dropped down' beds as maximises the space whilst still get the extra berth.
With all this in mind, keep checking autotrader, and do like the 'Roller Team T 590' or 'Chauson 530'. MTPLM of 3500KG (payload of 700KG). Both great layouts. Not buying until Feb/Mar next year, but actively looking to make sure I make the right decision!
Anyone that have experience of these motor homes or similar, please let me know what you find good or bad with them.
Thanks again for your nice comments, and merry xmas to you all!

Many people are of the opinion that you are better off buying a second-hand model rather than a new one. Too many new models tend to have faults that need to be sorted in the first year of ownership.

Welcome, a wise choice to join here first!

I‘m no expert but from my tenting days I think you can knock two berths off anything that’s advertised.
Ours has five seat belts, one fixed island bed in the rear, a drop down double over the dinette plus one you make up using the table.
Just me, the better half and the dog. Niether of us vastly over weight but space is tight. Unless you are spending most of the time outside and only kipping down I don’t think there is enough circulation space for that number of people. I can’t see how the toilet and washing facilities would work for that number of people either.

We actually purchased the one my wife walked into and said she like!
For us it is ideal, 7 metres.

Good hunting.

Welcome aboard.
I went from a small pcv to a lwb hi top one and currently in a 8m tag axle. Now downsizing to a 7m lol.
Space as peeps said, is the important bit. And once you get used to driving them it's second nature .
Whatever you get, get out there and enjoy as life is short, live it.:giggle:

;bigwelcome:Only advice I can give is take your time looking for the right layout, look at as many vans as you can and I’m sure you will find one you like.

Hi and welcome.
We had similar requirements- mainly sleeping two but occasionally two grandkids come along. We chose an AutoTrail 669. Not drop down beds but the grandkids beds come out and spend most of their time stored at home. The NEC motorhome show in February might be an idea to visit - most manufacturers go, with all their various models and layouts.
