Quick question can you jump start your van using the hab battery

I know stater batteries and hab batteries are different in how they deliver power but wondered if it was possible?

Possible yes of course… recommended, probably not as they are designed for long ‘slow’ and deep discharging and not short bursts of high cranking Amps….

Yes you can. Obviously not ideal, but having a flat starting battery isn’t an ideal situation.

I have certainly done that. We have two Platinum 100Ah lead acid batteries which although sold as leisure batteries are probably just relabelled starter batteries. Not sure if the BMS in a lithium battery would allow it. Perhaps best to connect the jumper leads but not start. Then after half an hour or so disconnect the leads and try a start, hopefully the lithium will have topped up the lead acid enough.

Perhaps it is wise to stick with lead acid

Possible but not ideal as they are different structures. Why not just carry a booster like the NOCO ones.?

Edit, by coincidence this has popped up again today

Possible yes in an emergency.
I know some people have done it, actually seen it done on one Fun rally.
Dont think it does the leisure battery much good...

One of two jumps off a hab battery isn’t going to kill it.

I fitted a switch in my last van to effectively put the hab & starter batteries in parallel for that purpose ( never need it,but had I would have been a lot easier than messing about with jump leads) all batteries were lead acid

Thanks for all the quick replies

What I thought but always good to get advice from the collective 👍

I used to do that with one of my Landrovers using the winch battery linked to the vehicle battery with one of my jump start leads. As others have said its the same with any second battery but accessing the batteries in our coach build would make it awkward.

I have a second low power B2B in our van.

B2B - Battery to Battery charger. It is wired to charge the engine battery from the leisure battery and I can switch it on manually to keep the keep the engine battery fully charged. Lead-Acid batteries like to be kept fully charged.

That way, I can safely use the LiFePO4 leisure batteries to 'jump start' the engine without having to physically connect the two batteries and with no need to access the batteries to do it.

Other options are available, but I know I can fully charge the engine battery from the LiFePO4 leisure batteries if I ever need to.
