Thought this might be useful to foreign travellers who have iPhones/iPads.

You instal the App for the price of £6.99 from the App Store and you can then talk into your phone in English and it will translate what you say into the language of your choice. It records what it thinks you have said on the screen and then provides the translation both written and in speech via the phone speaker.

Should be fantastic for overseas travel especially in out of the way places like China, Japan but will help me enormously enough in Spain and Germany!

Does it do Norfolkian - Bro?

;)

My old cheap-as-chips Motorola Moto G android smartphone came complete with a Google translate app, which you just set the language required and speak into it to get both a simultaneous audio translation as well as a text-based translation. And it can then handle a reply in the foreign language back to English. Unless I'm mistaken, much as described by the OP.

No cost to buy, it was already on the phone. Have used it successfully a couple of times.

Good heads up for the Apple people...

But
Google translate has done that for ages and free :) (y) one of the reasons i moved from iphone..

You used to be able to do this with google translate! Is it the same but now chargeable?

Living in France our experience is the French normally do not understand the translation

Just to add, this kind of technology blows me away, it's like something out of Star Trek (y)

I found it particularly helpful when requesting something relatively complicated - either speak or type in English and then show the full text in French, Spanish or whatever language is required and have found myself fully understood.

But I agree, it's not 'silver bullet' perfect.
