Just been on the Greek ferries booking site and the cost seems very high - what ball park costs have the funsters been getting for single or return trips and which month ?

We are camping on board from bari to patrus next Tuesday (yippee). Bought months ago, paying was a blue job so Mr Mousy will have to tell you, or cliffanger as they are coming too. :dance2::dance2::dance2::Grin::Grin::Grin:

edit I think we ring Dale at villamare he’s very helpful and sorts everything out. You probably won’t get camping on board now as that sells out quickly.

Can't remember what we paid last year, but it is what it is.

Go for open deck and sleep in the van instead of getting a cabin (not available on all routes).

We also got an over 60 discount, but this is unavailable online. We got this buying the ticket at the port. We had to ask for it. The problem with it is that you you can't do it in advance.

Also go for a hookup (no fee) , as your batteries may struggle to keep the fridge going if its hot. We didn't know ehu was available and all sockets were taken by the time we twigged, but a very nice german man piggy backed us through his van window.

Finally, go for the Venice route. Nothing quite like sailing out through the lagoon past st marks.

It was an “out of interest “ question really for the near future but grateful for any tips or suggestions as I am in Italy in early October (and it appears that camping on board is available from Bari )

We are sailing 4th Sept Ancona-Patras with Camping on Board and returning 20th Oct. Return price is £905. Booked January. Even then we could not get the exact return dates we wanted.

It is almost getting into the realms of 'if you have to ask, you cannot afford it'. But it keeps the numbers down.

As Mousy said ring Dale at Viamare(+44 20 8206 3420) - he has everything at his fingertips, will get all discounts available and he charges nothing to client, as commission comes from ferry companies.

Mousy

On thread about France temperatures you said you are leaving on Tues and here you said you said Bari-Patras 'next Tuesday' which Tues are you crossing to Patras?

We arrive Patras 1200 Tues 5th Sept.

Where are you going? Is it your first with MH in Greece?

We thought that this time we might head inland in Peloponnese but maybe we stick closer to the coast as we do not know much west of Mani, although I know the east from my yachting days.

On 15th Sept we take another ferry Piraeus-Patmos, because we know so many people there as I have been visiting for 40+ years and it is so easy to park at beaches with tavernas. Two years ago we were the only MH on the island.

nicholsong we depart Newhaven - Dieppe next Tuesday (29th). Catching the Bari to Patras with camping on board Tuesday 5th September with Cliff and Ger. Not our first time, we have toured all around the Pelopennese. We are hoping to revisit a few favourites but are heading to explore mainland Greece on our way to Turkey. We will have just under 3 months in both countries.

Your trip sounds lovely. We have taken the Moho to Kythira, it was beautiful. Tempted to go to Skopelos this time. Maybe our paths will cross!

We booked direct with Anek ferries.

2 adults, both over 60.
Bari to Patas
Camping on deck
No early booking discount

€377 one way.

I know it’s expensive, but we’re really looking forward to going, especially as it’s another trip with the Mousy s, our Funster Besties.

Now Mousy Dawn, what shall we call our Hollibobs thread?

That would be nice. Sounds as though you dock Patras a day later than us.

I have sailed to both Kithyra and Skopelos in the past.

The fares several posters have quoted for the shorter crossing from Bari seem in-line with ours from Ancona for the longer crossing/shorter drive.

Two years ago we came back Patras-Venice. Now that is expensive, and 'Camping on deck' we were admittedly in an open deck as far as ventilation, but stuffed in between HGVs. But it saved us a couple of days, which at the time important, but no longer.

Our Ancona trip was far preferable to the Venice one, especially the seafood.

'Good Sailing Gentlemen'...and Ladies of course.

We’re going from Bari to Igoumenitsa on Tuesday 29th August.
Not our first choice, that would be Ancona but camping on board from there was sold out for a week or so either side when I booked this leg at the beginning of May. It cost £345 through Viamare. In the past I’ve booked through Anek’s website or called their office but more recently found it easier to do it through Dale at Viamare.
This year has been especially busy and a return trip end of April to first week in July (I can’t remember the exact dates) cost me a shade over £900. Plus having to book the homeward bound leg months in advance in order to secure a place, which in 5 years of travelling to Greece and back we previously haven’t had to do.
Anek and Superfast (owned by the same company) are the only ones who offer camping on board.

It's not a cheap crossing, never has been. Last time I booked it was in 2020, but Covid stopped us going. The return fare was €646 for 2 people, camping on board, 6m van. However, over 6m, under 7m was a massive €330 extra! That was in high season though. We booked through Viamare. Problem with some of the Italy-Greece crossings is they are non-refundable, but ours was. I had a quick look at routes earlier this week and Minoan (I think) don't seem to do camping on board anymore but have an offer where if you book a camper as your vehicle you can have a cabin for the price of deck passage. The first time I did the crossing in 1989 with my then girlfriend, now wife, we went from Bari to Patras with Ventouris Lines on an ex North Sea Ferries boat, with a car and a crappy cabin and I think it cost an awefull lot then.

If you do go, when you land at Patras it’s worth crossing the bridge or ferry might be cheaper, to visit Delphi. Also there is a site with great views on the left of the road from Itea to Delphi.

The loading chaos is included in the price though! Every time we've done the crossing it's been mayhem at loading time. The qualifications for being a boarding officer seems to be a very smart white uniform, sunglasses, blowing a whistle loudly and shouting Ela, Ela, Ela!! very loudly when not blowing the whistle.

Never come across chaos like it. Check in one building, passengers check in there, drivers go to a different place. No signs, blinding lights flashed right in your faces, loading staff arguing with each other!! OK once you get on at least!! I thought the Greeks were supposed to be experts at this!
