Sorry, I know this is the bane of every funsters life but its an important one!
I have a thetford 200 in this new to me van, and so far never been lucky enough to get away in nice weather, I’m great at picking the bad weekends☹️
But this weekend we’ve struck gold however the smell of urine from the toilet is something else even though the cassette was fresh before we come away. I’ve ordered a freshen up kit of cassette and seat but in preparation is there anything else I can do? I have green fluid in the tank, used thetford bathroom cleaner on the bowl and even added a splash of bio liquid and it smells terrible. Any tricks before I install the cassette and clean the holding area?

I put some cat litter in the wells under the cassette in case of drips.
This sounds a good idea, but how do you deal with it when you pull the cassette out?
Does it drop on the ground or what?
We find if you open the flap before useing the toilet stops all leaks onto the cassette.

We normally use the 40 shot blue toilet chemical but on a recent trip we ran out of it so purchased some Elson Organic green fluid and it's the first time in years that the toilet stank.
Have just ordered some more of the 40 shot from eBay £10.99.
I'm afraid we have tried various organic fluids and not found one that works, likewise washing stuff,so for now and probably for the time we have left motorhomeing we will be sticking with the blue and pink.

Perhaps have a good disinfectant of the surrounding floor every day as well. As van is new to you, could there be embedded bacteria in the floor area which the hot weather has activated?
houdini is right. Make sure the flooring is clean. You surely know that men can't aim.

Get the freshen up kit. It's worth it to have a spare cassette and I noticed the toilet seat I removed when changing mine was quite discoloured and smelly in spite of having been cleaned multiple times, almost seems as if it gets absorbed into the plastic.
It’s ordered and on its way!

Of course you could always buy yourself a new Thetford cassette. I only use the Thetford green bio sachets. I’ve tried others but smell puts me off. With the green sachets the smell is pleasant enough to leave the loo in ‘open’ position. Secondly, we always refresh the cassette before every journey. That way we’ve one sachet and 3 litres water sloshing around during the journey thus making sure every nook and cranny gets a thorough sloshing before arrival. Lastly, and for obvious reasons we try to use site facilities wherever possible.

I wipe the bowl dry with toilet paper after each use and then spray with dettol disinfectant, no problems.

Yes to both the water and liquid. It’s horrific but I will clean out the wells before the new one is installed because currently us two girls feel like we are sat in a public loo after it’s been open 13 hours!
OK. If you have liquid in the wells underneath the cassette then the seal between the cassette and the toilet bowl is leaking. You need to change the seals (and lubricate them). Not a difficult job.

Is your cassette breather working to allow fumes to vacate via an external vent under the MH, it works and opens when you put the cassette in place, you can get a fan kit that draws fumes out but not cheap, I did find on mine that solids like loo roll can tangle around it and prevent venting.

I change the seal on the cassette every few years, seems to do the trick. Just changed it last week prior to heading away again next week.

As predicted it was leaking. What a mess and I’ve had to clean it all out with bleach and let it air. I’ve already ordered a new cassette and seat because to be honest the cassette isn’t the cleanest so I’m changing no seals!
Thank you all for your help 😃

If the cassette is not new then I wonder if there was any blue stuff left in the tank. Blue will kill the enzymes contained in any green or bio stuff that make it work. We have just got a new pvc and so far the Aldi bio works a dream. I do use the pink diluted spray when cleaning the toilet bowl.

I've been using Aldi or Lidl bio washing liquid for the last 3 or 4 years. I put some in the empty cassette and some in the flush tank, never any smells. I do have to regularly pour water down the shower drain as it evaporates in the little trap under the van in just a few days and allows the smell from the grey tank to enter the van even with the plug in the drain.

Solbio. I wasn't convinced when I saw this at Birmingham show but tried a bag. When I had couple of weeks to use the van, toilet was left with stale smell. This removed any smells. Great stuff. Natural and totally safe.

Had a similar problem when we bought ours, the problem was the carpet!!!

Going off the thread a bit, can you buy toilet liners for the bowl instead of lining the bowl with toilet paper ?
