hiya friends, just wondering which are the recommended camp sites for overnight and also mh friendly daytime parking on isle of arran.also tips on ferries for same. mainland to tarbert coming from south yorkshire would be appreciated. many thanks

To reach the Isle of Arran, you can take a ferry from Troon to Brodick (80 mins), or Claonaig on Kintyre to Lochranza (30 mins). Note: from 13 Jan – 27 Mar 2025, services to Brodick, Arran will operate from Troon only. There will be no services from Ardrossan to Brodick during this period. In winter, the ferry from Kintyre departs from Tarbert, not Claonaig.

Would think coming from S. Yorkshire Troon would be the one.
You haven`t said when you are going as not sure of summer service.

Auchrannie leisure resort have a motorhome stopover for 8 vehicles with all the facilities and you can use the resort facilities as well. Very dog friendly if you need that.
Just outside Brodick

Coming up there in June so would prefer the ferry X ings to the long way round.l should be able to get the ferry times all being well

We went last year. Seal Shore Camping had great views. Saw dolphins and otters. Bridgend campsite was very friendly and we had a great bike ride to the standing stones.

Register for a CalMac account and book your sailing in advance - even if it's by just a day or two. Don't rely on being able to turn up and go with CalMac especially with a motorhome.

Seal Shore is our favourite site over there. Gets booked out though as popular. The hotel bar / restaurant next door is open to all, and is dog friendly.
The nearby Forest of Falls cafe is well worth a visit. Can be midgey though.

Lochranza Campsite is good, but can be a bit midgey in the right/wrong conditions. Never been able to get in to their restaurant (Stags Pavilion), as always booked out.
Day street parking around Whiting Bay, Lamlash, Brodick is easy and plentiful.

Stuff to do:
  • Brodick Castle (SNT) is motorhome friendly, and plenty of parking.
  • Holy Isle - Small foot passenger ferry from Lamlash. No dogs allowed. Supposed to be worth a visit for walkers or those wanting to visit the retreat.
  • Drive around the island. About 65miles. Plenty to see, stop and do.
  • "Climb" up Goatfell.
  • Blue Pools - Glen Rosa
  • There's a few standing stones sites.

It's a great island, and just across the water from us. Have fun, and enjoy. (y)

Scottish school holidays are different to English. This years it's around 27th June to mid/late August.
Ferries/campsites will be busier during those dates, or you don't want to be around Scottish crutch goblins ... ;)

We stopped in car parks for a couple of nights. By the castle and walked up Goatfell and then on opposite side of island. I forget which one.

We filled up in Whiting Bay at the service point there and left a donation at the facility.

Beautiful place and people.

Book the ferry, they have had awful problems over winter and as others have said, they don’t accept motorhomes in the standby queue.

There is a motorhome stopover at Auchrannie just along from Brodick, it doesn't list charges, but it looks like it has water & Dump facilities, maybe EHU at additional cost.
Sandra irnbru is the Lady to speak to, with a lot of work, she help set up a motorhome style aire there with the council, and runs Fun Rallies every year or used to.

Plenty of wild camping spots if that's you're bag & parking within the towns or villages is usually quite easy.
Beware of the condition of the roads though, they are in the process of getting back to medieval on Arran just now, the roads are terrible.

Campsites at Lochranza ( north) seal shore (south)and shiskine (west)
Shiskine has limited space and a few pitches vould be difficult to get onto when wet.
Lochranza could be tricky in places when wet but a lovely site.

Years ago we went to Arran turned left off ferry ,ie.went round island clockwise, big mistake , should have went clockwise by the coast road, there was a campsite at top right-hand corner of island, but at top of island there was a large piece of grass with a public toilet block with water tap , a local told me lots of Camper's park there and we moved there it had beautiful views across the water to mountains, mind you this was probably 35 years ago but may be worth a look .

Is that not Millport on the Isle of Cumbrae, I know Sandra holds rallies there each year not seen any for Arran.

Yes of course!, My Mistake it is Millport that Sandra has worked with, not Arran. I am a twit!
But at least I did find the motorhome stopover near Brodick for the OP in the Arran thread,, which is good news for all that want to go there, maybe try out the new long awaited dual fuel ship from Troon to Brodick also.
Thanks lorger for pointing that out, hope you and irnbru Sandra are keeping well, haven't heard from her in a while.

Tarbert loch Fyne is on the mainland but you don't need to be going there.
The ferry is supposed to start running from Ardrossan to Arran next month if they ever get it repaired. The new (7 year old) ferry is running from Troon now as it doesn't fit in the harbour on the Ardrossan- Brodick route that it was built for. There's loads of Parking on Arran and places for water and water. Use search for sites.

Did Arran June time a couple of years ago. Crossed Ardrosan to Brodrick, had a couple of nights off site, plenty of places and a couple of nights at Seal Shore which was a good site with friendly owners. Crossed from Lochranza to Cloanaig back to the mainland then down through Campbeltown to Mull of Kintyre before working up the coast and heading to Mull. Seal shore was busy so I’d recommend pre booking if you want a spot.

We were there in September to do the Arran coastal way and stayed at 4 different sites, highly recommended King's Caves Motorhome Aire, Lochranza site and Seal Shore Camping at Kildonan, we were very disappointed by Middletons Campsite at Lamlash, see Smarties review in Search For Sites, basically it has now been sold to a new owner for development.

Hi TinaLes , I'm still around though more likely to see posts when im tagged . Unfortunately due to the ferry fares ive never organised a meet at Arran. I've just sent an email off to Millport trying to negiotiate a summer price , not holding my breath for a great deal though since they have just hiked prices up to £25 a night at weekends. Hope you are well.
