Is this true?

Sounds like the husband may have fallen asleep smoking, or something similar, and the mattress smouldered, perhaps for a while - wifey opens door - WHOOSH!

Looking at the photos , it would seem the motorhome was an Adria Izola. French bed layout, perhaps it was the heater underneath the bed that started it, I guess we will never know.

Begs the question what sort of sick mind has 'Mellissa' got to even think up the story

I have reread them and cannot find this at all ?
What posts ?
See post #9 Sandra has put a link to a news article referring to the fire. Although there is no mention of this being a deliberate fire.

Exactly..
'Mellissa' took what seems to be a tragic accident and turned the event in to a sinister nasty murder

Our friend is in Britain just now but had heard about it.

We were parked there a couple of weeks ago for one night .
We did noticed one of the half finished houses they were building had been set on fire .
Very sad news if true

I think the only thing Mellissa is guilty of is trying to warn people about an area that may not be safe possible after a miss translation by one of these so called translation apps that can get you into deep trouble.

I don't think there was any malice, I had another email at 12:40

Hi Jim,

I’ve had chance to calm down a bit and I don’t want to cause any alarm about the mattress being purposely burned. The news has not reported this as intentional so maybe amidst the drama details were misinterpreted, that’s still unclear.

However the fire risk is very worrying and seeing how quickly it all happened was frightening.

Best,

Melissa

Reading the previous posts by other ex-firefighters on the Forum I would agree that, in the photo of the m/h taken from the (UK) near-side, it appears that the fire started internally.

However, in the photo taken from the (U.K.) off-side it is less clear. Damage is clearly visible at low level. It is possible that the fire originated under the motorhome, penetrated the off-side and burned upwards.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to pinpoint a definitive source of origin from the photos alone but, based on experience, I would tend to agree with the previous posters. An on-the-spot examination is required to be certain.

Either way, it’s a tragedy and shows how vulnerable to fire caravans and motorhomes are.

Also highlights how important it is to keep your fire and carbon monoxide alarms in good order I change my alarm batteries every year needed or not :xThumb:

A good reminder.

When we took delivery of our new motorhome five weeks ago the first mod I made was to change the smoke detector for one with a ten year battery.

Some one in an earlier post suggested the Heater might have been fitted under the bed. Knowing the propensity that some have for loading stuff adjacent to Heaters. The seat of the fire may yet be explained.?

I used to have the job of examining Heating Systems in Schools, Care homes etc; for Dorset Council. It was a regular occurrence to find Potentially Flammable clothing, bedding and the like stored alongside Heating Boilers. I lost count of the Number of times I made "recommendation for removal" comment on the examination forms, and went back the following year to find nothing had changed!. Hospitals where even worse, the boiler room(s) being regular dumping grounds for unwanted equipment!. Hospitals and Military Establishments, being "government", are (or where 20 years ago) exempt of many if not all H&S regulations, they are or can be regarded only as "advisory".

We could guess all day what went wrong, at the end of the day its tragic and even more so near Xmas time but I wonder how the 36yr old female got out and the 70 yr old man didn't. Obviously no smoke detector in the van or it all happened so fast. Looking at similar or perhaps the same layout online the heater would maybe be under the french bed. Was this the cause of the fire, a dropped cigarette after falling asleep drunk perhaps.

May the gentleman RIP and for our own safety sakes make sure both our Co2 and smoke detectors are in good working order.

"The callers indicate that a mattress is burning inside the caravan, located just behind the Miguel Delibes School, and they inform about the person inside it. "

See a person inside through a window, OK, but how would callers see a mattress on fire inside the MH unless their viewpoint is on a higher level? You wouldn't expect them to stand close to a vehicle on fire. With gas bottles.

Modern mattresses such as those fitted by Adria are also supposed to be fire retardent. An old mattress placed underneath ... likely to be more combustible. Can't rule that out yet.

There's usually more to the story than you find in the local newspaper.

What a tragedy.

From memory, there are houses to to the Left Side (when looking out to sea) of the Car Park at Bolnuevo.
I can imagine the GC turning any 'van parked up hard against those houses.

When we were there earlier this year the motorhomes were parked up at the back of the parking area well away from the housing. the only van parked near the houses was, so i was told, owned by a resident. it did have Spanish plates and was there for all the time we were at the campsite. other vans only stayed for a night or 2.

I saw this this morning on a Spanish motorhome forum, very sad RIP.
The comments are varied, from batteries/ boiler / electrical fault, but one thing that was mentioned was the fact that a lot of motorhomers chain the doors for security and if you have a fire they go up so quick they can't get out, although on this occasion the lady got out so who knows, but anyone that's had a fire will know you panic, and when I had a motorcycle on fire I was more concerned about putting that out than my own saftey................ but if you asked me what I would do, ? the answer would be get away from it as quickly as possible, but in practice it didn't happen like that, ? I was a bit concerned about my dads garage, that didn't help. ? Bob.
