We currently have 2 x 6Kg Gaslow bottles installed into our gas locker, but want to change them to 11Kg.

Is this a straightforward and safe DIY job to do or should I get them changed professionally?

Are any specialised tools required?

Obviously, safety with Gas is paramount.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Are your bottle retaining straps big enough to go round the new bottles? (I'm assuming they have a larger diameter) and is the pipe work long enough to reach up to the higher bottles, take note of dunnah01 's post about regulator being higher than the bottle necks.
Soapy water ( or gas leak detector spray can) to check for leaks once you've finshed the swap.

Very good points. Thank you. I will check the retaining straps and pipework tomorrow.

Check you have enough space for 2x 11kg bottles, if not perhaps only swap 1 out?
The gas locker is designed to hold 2 x 11Kg bottles. We asked the dealer to transfer our 6Kg bottles from our PVC when we bought our current coach built.

Good suggestion to think about swapping only one out, if necessary. Thank you.

Should be easy, where you a caravaner..? Remember the days before refillables that we all used to change the gas bottles over all the time with a spanner or adjustable… no need for a “professional “ we were all professionals in the old days…😆😉

Actually, I was a caravaner and had no issue changing the gas bottles. I wasn’t sure if changing the Gaslow bottles was as easy, as they are more of a permanent installation.

It’s easy when you know how is the answer, refillable cylinders , tanks should certainly be installed correctly and are not quite as simple as changing an exchange gas bottle , there is a liquid state filling connection to make .
It’s amazing how many diyers, professional installers incorrectly use sealants and PTFE tape etc on the filler hose connections ⚠️

It’s just a case of unscrewing the 6kg bottle from the hose and then screwing it on the the 11kg bottle replacement, making sure everything is turned off … of course..👍🏼

I would add caution to that simplistic explanation.
Always slowly release the filler hose connection as it can often contain liquid state LPG , also it should never be taken for granted that the NRV (non return valve) isn’t stuck open on the cylinder / tank ⚠️
Always slightly slacken the filler hose connection allowing a minute or two to release the pressure, being wary not to burn your hands ( freezing)

Our first and new motorhome had a gas locker well large enough to hold 2 x 11kg Gaslow bottles - so Pete went up to Loughborough and bought them and all the hoses. regulator etc etc needed to do the job once we got it home from the dealers on the Saturday. Busy with things we'd already got planned for ages on Sunday & Monday. Tuesday morning bright and early out goes Husband to get the job started. I cranked the computer up to get some paperwork printed and wondering what time he'd be requiring a coffee - and back in to the house he walked. Everything was perfectly fine - EXCEPT - the gas locker door in the side of the motorhome was not wide enough to get an 11kg bottle through. So off he went back up to Loughborough again to swap the ruddy things for the 6kg ones. Just as well that our house isn't hundreds of miles away from Gaslow, ain't it!

It had to be sorted PDQ because we'd got a channel crossing booked on the Thursday!

Best to wear some rubberised gardening/DIY gloves then no risk and no loss of grip either when fully undoing it when it's loose.
