Irish ferry fire in channel

Discussed here yesterday evening..........

Control room fire I believe with none of the passenger areas affected thankfully. Terrifying to go through such a shocking breakdown at sea, but the crew and services train regularly for such things

Part of my work history saw me work on ferries and cruise ships in the past. We had to do safety drills with the crew on occasions and know the exits for safety reasons. The only time I worried was when the main engine broke down during a storm on the Irish crossing. The boat was rolling about and things smashing. This was around the time of the MS Estonia, so that was in people's minds. We were under way again within 2 hours on reduced power and the ferry confined to port for urgent repairs when we got there. We got interviewed as in the respect that we were employed by the company and working during the crossing, we were considered temporary crew. Nothing at all to do with us of course, but they grilled us on what systems we were working on or were shut down for us to work. I found it reassuring that it was taken very seriously
